Excellent book

This is an excellent book. It is for beginners and that is exactly what I am. The photographs are in bright full color and take you step by step through the tying of the fly. There are a lot of fly tying books out there and I have looked through dozens and dozens of them. Not one of them came close to being as good as this book.

The wire o' binding that lets the book lie flat is just an added bonus.

Not bad, but ...

There are some truly great things to say about Mr. Gathercole's book, "Fly Tying for Beginners." First, it is laid out in a very sensible manner. Starting with tools and techniques up front, followed by a list of flies, all in awesome crystal-clear color photos. The book's size and wire wound binding makes it so easy to use on at the tying bench.

That said, as a novice to fly tying, I found myself going to other resources to research techniques such as tying hair wings. In addition, it would have been MORE helpful (for me) if some of the techniques I needed to use were found in the same pages as the fly I was tying at that time. One other point is that I found myself having to guess several times on tail lengths, hackle sizes,and occasionally material placement.

Overall, I'm very glad to have this book as a reference, but I'm also glad I have OTHER references to assist me with the gaps of information I found missing in this one.

A great first fly tying book

This is one of the best three fly tying books I've found for beginners. I can't say I've been tying flies for a long time - I'm clearly in the beginner category. However, I've been writing documentation for a living and teaching how to design instructional materials at a university so I tend to be picky about these kinds of "starting guides." This book has a great deal to recommend it for beginners.

The beginning portion of the book is devoted to a comprehensive section dealing with the basic fly tying skills and each of the individual fly "recipes" refers back to those relevant skills by page number. Pretty handy.

The photographs are clear, relevant and in color. You would think that color wouldn't make a difference but in fly tying it does. So much of the material is colored that selecting and using the right one is far easier when the images are in accurate color.

The step by step instructions are simple and concise. Boy, does that make a difference when you're looking back and forth between the book several times when you're first starting.

It uses a spiral wire binder which means it lays open to the page you're working on without your having to use soda and beer cans as paper weights. This is a bonus because none of the flies I've found so far recommend adding a sugar coating to the feathers.

Finally, the book not only includes a list of materials needed for each fly, making trips to the fly store for materials easier, but it also includes in the description the kind of fish that fly is good for. Again, this is a handy bonus for beginners. I want to tie flies I'll use for particular fish and tend to stay away from those that won't be useful to me.

My only disappointment is a minor one. It doesn't include instructions on using the Matarelli whip finisher but that's something I can live without.

All in all, a great book for those just starting out in fly tying.

Pat Hastings has been involved with dogs since 1959. She is currently an AKC judge and a highly respected educator in the dog world. Her articles have appeared in such publications as the AKC Gazette, Dog News, Clean Run and numerous breed magazines. Excellent Book

Structure in Action: The Makings of a Durable Dog does more than just state what proper structure is.
The book explains every area of the dog's body, what is proper or poor structure, why each part is important for performance/ conformation
and documents with pictures both proper and poor structure. This book is an easy read and will be a great reference manual for competitors,
breeders or judges.

This book is great for all dog people, if you are in performance sports or not. Just being aware of your dogs current structure. So much i didn't know and very intresting. Even if you are planning on getting a new dog soon. They highlight structure features you would never know to look at.

An Awesome font of information

I got this book after becoming involved with Purebred Dogs and my AKC Parent Club Judges Education committee. As part of my own education I must say that this is a must have for anyone who is/will become a breeder, or someone wanting to make a good decision when purchasing a puppy. It also helps to decide whether a currently owned dog should be involved in performance venues in the dog world such as agility, hunting, lure coursing, etc., and/or considered for a possible breeding. A companion DVD Puppy Puzzle by the same author helps visually to see what is discussed and I highly suggest getting both items. Pat Hasting also does Seminars across the country and a day long seminar(often put on by Kennel Clubs or Breed Clubs) is a must attend if it happens to be in your geographical area. Buy this, Read it, Look at your dogs, and gain a Wealth of Knowledge. They are our best friends, it is important to ask no more of them than what they can safely( for them) give.

This book provides an introduction into the fundamentals of non-relativistic quantum mechanics. In Part 1, the essential principles are developed. Applications and extensions of the formalism can be found in Part 2. The book includes not only material that is presented in traditional textbooks on quantum mechanics, but also discusses in detail current issues such as interaction-free quantum measurements, neutrino oscillations, various topics in the field of quantum information as well as fundamental problems and epistemological questions, such as the measurement problem, entanglement, Bell's inequality, decoherence, and the realism debate. A chapter on current interpretations of quantum mechanics concludes the book. To develop quickly and clearly the main principles of quantum mechanics and its mathematical formulation, there is a systematic change between wave mechanics and algebraic representation in the first chapters. The required mathematical tools are introduced step by step. Moreover, the appendix collects compactly the most important mathematical tools�that supplementary literature can be largely dispensed. In addition, the appendix contains advanced topics, such as Quantum- Zeno effect, time-delay experiments, Lenz vector and the Shor algorithm. About 250 exercises, most of them with solutions, help to deepen the understanding of the topics. Target groups of the book are�student teachers�and all students of physics, as minor or major, looking for a reasonably easy and modern introduction into quantum mechanics.

About the Author

Jochen Pade studied physics in Freiburg (Germany), where he made his PhD in theoretical physics in 1978. Since 1980, he has been a�lecturer at the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg (Germany). His research interests are: Theoretical physics, didactics and popularization of science.

Product very well designed and clear to read and understand. Unfortunately the one person I wanted to research was not included. However, that does not detract from the fact that this book could be a very useful tool for anyone researching family who emigrated during this time. Could not fault the book.

Miss Fortune Mystery 4

CIA assassin Fortune Redding is hiding out in in Sinful, Louisiana, because one of her former targets has put a price on her head. There, she has befriended eighty somethings Gertie and Ida Belle, former counter intelligence operatives and leaders of the Sinful Ladies Society.
In this book, their friend Ally, baker extraordinaire, is suddenly the victim of several crimes. Her house is broken into and set on fire, and a peeping tom seems to be following her around. Since Ally is one of the nicest people in town, nobody has any idea why this is happening to her. Fortune and her friends set out to find the criminal and prevent anything worse from happening. As usual, this ends in complete and utter chaos more often than not.

The book is chock-full of laugh out loud scenes. There's lots and lots of lovely humor. Gertie and Ida Belle are absolutely hilarious and they get Fortune into the most absurd situations. Wet T-shirt contest, anyone?
We also see some progress in the romance between Fortune and Deputy Carter. It's slow progress, and not particularly straightforward, but progress nonetheless. And it's all the more believable for its slow pace. Also, Fortune is in something of a quandary now: She wants to be closer to Carter, but can't reveal her secret identity. She wants to help her friend Ally, but doing so might compromise Carter's investigation and (through his relationship with her) endanger his job. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series to see how Fortune deals with this.
Throughout the series, you can definitely see how Fortune's character changes. She goes from cold assassin to someone who forms real human attachments for the first time in her life. In the beginning, she only wanted to get back to her job in D.C. But over the last few weeks, Sinful and its residents have somehow grown on her. It makes for some nice character evolvement. All the other characters in the book have well-defined traits as well. They might not always be nice or particularly smart, but they're always colorful and entertaining. It makes for some great reading.

This is book 4 in the series, and it can easily be read as a standalone. It's a very funny story with a neat little mystery. I can recommend it (and all the other books in the series) to anyone. The same goes for the `Ghost in Law Mysteries' by the same author.

Another great romantic mystery

If you haven't read this series or any books by Jana Deleon, you are missing out on a great read. I think I smiled and laughed my way through the whole book. If you are looking for a light hearted, funny romantic mystery, you simply must read the series. Start with Louisianna Longshot to get the whole back story, followed by Lethal Bayou Beauty and then Swamp Sniper before reading Swamp Team 3. The clues are strung out as the plot moves along unraveling the mystery at the same time the characters discover! So you are constantly eager to turn the next page. The comical antics of Gertie, Ida Belle and Fortune are always the perfect combination to make you laugh and have. Good time reading. The romance is just enough to have you routing for Fortune and Carter to get together without all the sex scenes that some authors use to fill pages but detract from the plot. All in all, the perfect combination. My only complaint is that I wanted more, so write fast!

Is it worth buying? Absolutely! I paid full price the first day it came out and loved it. Can't wait for the next one!

A Fun Filled Romp

What can I say that will adequately convey the sheer joy of reading a series of books that engage your mind and yet somehow make you laugh out loud when you are not the type of person who does that? Fortune, a trained killing machine, ignorant of all but her job, Gertie and Ida Belle, old timers who served as spies during the Viet Nam era, and poor Carter, the deputy trying to solve cases without the ladies' "help", make for characters you enjoy completely. The bayou world of Sinful, Louisiana is a study of bias, prejudice, crazy rules and convoluted southern manners, that adds a dollop of unfettered confusion and hilarity to the shenanigans. I read all four books in this series in one day because I just did not want to leave the town and people of Sinful. Can't wait for the next volume!!!! Have fun, readers, and thank you Ms DeLeon!

Bill Pierce and Scott Murr are experts at the The Furman Institute of Running and Scientific Training (FIRST) and authors of the popular book Runner's World Run Less, Run Faster. Bill Pierce is an experienced marathoner and chair of the Health Sciences Department at Furman University. He lives in Greenville, South Carolina. Scott Murr is an experienced marathoner and 12-time Ironman Triathlon finisher, is director of the Furman Fitness and Aquatics Center. He lives in Greenville, South Carolina.

From the authors who developed the three-day-a-week training plan, but this time for Masters runners.

I haven't finished reading this yet, but so far, and from flipping through it, it's terrific. I trained for three marathons using the 3-day-a-week FIRST training plan years ago. These guys know their physiology of running. I like that they have geared this to the "masters" runners, of which I am one. I'm excited to have a new training plan to follow. Thanks, for writing this book.

Another great resource from Bill Pierce and Scott Murr. As a long time Run less, Run faster runner, I highly recommend their new book. Both Bill and Scott have taken the time to answer my questions via email and they are very committed to helping runners improve! I will definitely be incorporating the 7 hour workout week into my lifestyle as I attempt to remain a life-long runner! Thanks to their original training program, I was able to qualify for the Boston Marathon and look forward to attempting another qualifying run while using the tips and advice from their new book.

Fitness advice not just for runners.

You must read this book if you are one of the dwindling number of older Americans who are not obese and undisciplined. There's not many of you our there, but we need you to serve as a reminder to the rest of us that maintaining fitness is still possible regardless of your age. Author Bill Pierce lays out great training advice for runners who choose to run the half marathon or less. I am not a runner, but I am old, and I found a wealth of good advice for old people who still want to retain some fitness. He is non-judgmental, simple and direct in his advice. He provides great illustrations for all the exercises which make up his 7-hour workout week. Read it and feel motivated to stay fit.
