From Publishers Weekly
The only French war against America-in the traditional sense-was an undeclared maritime war in the late 1790s, and it does not appear until the 10th chapter of this provocative but flawed study. The rest is good old-fashioned realpolitik that never fooled George Washington, who understood and accepted that "it is a maxim... that no nation is to be trusted farther than it is bound by its interests." Unger, the author of biographies of Lafayette, John Hancock and Noah Webster, argues that the recent French campaign to frustrate American interests is part of a policy that stretches back to the founding of the Republic. Much of Unger's story is well known. France, which lost its North American empire in 1763, was the first nation to recognize American independence and to offer assistance during the Revolution; monarchical and aristocratic France was more interested in weakening old enemy England and regaining its lost colonies than in liberty. That France should continue to base its diplomacy on its perceived self-interests thereafter-even to the point of trying to destabilize the American administration-is not startling, but Unger is often shrill in his characterizations. He exaggerates French threats (which often were no more than wishful thinking), implies the worst about French behavior and casts the French people in an unflattering light: "certifiably insane," the "French hordes" commit "vile treachery." In the present climate, there is likely an audience for a book that promises to expose French duplicity, but Unger promises more than he can deliver.

From the Inside Flap
By the end of 1798, France—"our oldest ally"—had captured or sunk more than eight hundred American ships, and President John Adams called George Washington out of retirement to command the defense of the nation's shores against imminent French invasion. The French war against America had reached its climax. After thirty-five years of feigning friendship for America, France at last revealed her real motive for supporting the American Revolution—and it had nothing to do with liberty.

In The French War Against America, award-winning author and historian Harlow Giles Unger shatters the myth of France as our oldest ally and reveals her as our oldest enemy. Citing hundreds of secret and not-so-secret personal and official documents and letters from French, American, and British sources, Unger lays bare a chapter of American history ignored by many historians: the long and treacherous French plot to recapture North America.

Contrary to popular belief, the French Army came to fight in America's Revolutionary War not to save America but to conquer her. By infiltrating the Continental Army high command, French officers hoped to replace Washington and establish a French military dictatorship. By war's end, French agents had infiltrated every area of American life, developing close relationships with top American officials, working their way to the highest levels of the American military, and bribing cabinet members to obtain secret documents—all to try to turn the young nation into a French vassal state. From the beginning of the war, however, a small group of courageous Founding Fathers had remained suspicious of French motives. This action-packed history follows them—Washington, Adams, John Jay, and others—as they outwit every overt and covert French plot to destroy the United States.

A decade after the American Revolution, French government agents tried to overthrow President Washington by provoking widespread street rioting, while French warships occupied the harbors of major cities. Again, the Founding Fathers outwitted the French. Furious at their nation's humiliation, the French Navy began sinking American ships to crush American foreign trade. John Adams ordered construction of an American Navy that destroyed the French fleet. Undeterred, the French continued to plot to reconquer North America into the next century. Napoleon I prepared to send 20,000 troops to invade Louisiana in 1802, and his nephew Napoleon III sent 40,000 troops to conquer Mexico in 1863, with orders to march northward into the United States.

To this day, "our oldest ally" often seems still at war with America—metaphorically and diplomatically, if not militarily. The French War Against America provides new perspectives on the origins of that war and explains why it may never end. An important addition to Franco-American history, it adds new insights into current diplomatic relationships. It is also an exciting, action-filled drama of remarkable human courage.

Read this book, not the Publisher's Weekly review of it.
By Michael L. Oddenino
I heartily recommend this book and couldn't disagree more with the tendentious review from Publishers Weekly. Unger's documentation is available in his book with endnotes for anyone truly interested to investigate. The Publisher's Weekly review lacks any such counter attempt to actually provide references of Unger's supposed errors. The review takes certain of Unger's adjectives out of context in an attempt to suggest that Unger

is just name-calling. This is an unworthy ploy designed to seduce the casual reader.

Unger uses hard data in making his case against the French but the Publisher's Weekly review would have one believe he relies on adjectives alone. This is an inaccurate and incomplete description of what Unger actually does, but the charge of "argument by adjective" is exactly what is done by the reviewer in criticizing Unger. The Publisher's Weekly review relies primarily on adjectives or conclusory statements such as: "provocative but flawed," "not-startling," "exaggerates,"and "shrill," which serve as a feeble substitutes for any reliably significant commentary on the book.

Unger details, with more than adequate documentation, French efforts to topple George Washington, French efforts to invade Louisiana, French efforts to betray the American peace negotiators after the Revolutionary War, as well as other examples of French treachery. What the book details is a string of French actions designed specifically to harm the United States. Intentionally and deceptively taking steps to harm an "ally" is accepted by the Publisher's Weekly review as France simply basing "its diplomacy on its perceived self-interests." The Publisher's Weekly review is fraudulent and I am confident that in any debate, Unger would shred the reviewer. Of course, that debate won't happen as "bologna fears the grinder."

I have no problem with critical reviews, and when they are well-done, they enhance what I get out of a book. Neither the Publisher's Weekly reviewer's adjectives nor conclusory comments serve to advance the discussion of a very interesting topic for both the historian and political observer. I stand by my recommendation of the book and welcome hard evidence of any errors that the book might contain - adjectives will not suffice.

While the bulk of the book focuses on the period just before, during and after the Revolutionary War, Unger also gives some attention to more modern events. He discusses the phenomenon of current French leaders all being ENARCHS or graduates of the Ecole Nationale d'Administration (ENA plus the Latin/Greek suffix "arch" meaning "chief,")

Here are some examples of insights he shares:

"... enarchs have badly undermined the French economy by discouraging free enterprise, limiting investments in creative genius and modern invention, stunting expansion of the arts and sciences, and discouraging individual initiative. Harvard University's endowment alone, for example, is more than double the combined annual budgets of all universities in France. " p. 251

"Impotent or not, France and the French continue to plot against

America. As de Villepin boasts, "France is obsessed with power . . . galvanized by conquest. It is a national disease passed down through the ages . . . we have never learned to live in partnership . . . France is still aflame with the passions of a great nation, fervently defending her rightful place in history." p. 252.

This book combines great historical research with fascinating insights into modern day events. A great read for those with an interest in these areas.

No Such Thing as a Free Lunch

If you're a history buff of the early settling of our country through the War of 1812 you'll be fascinated by this book.

Again like the Loyalist view of the Revolutionary War this is a subject never addressed in our elementary or high school education.

We as Americans should be most appreciative for France's participation on land and particularly at sea in support of the colonists in the war against the British Crown. However, as this book points out it was hardly an altruistic effort by the French.

France had every intention re-establishing their influence on the North American continent once the British were defeated. Their plans to accomplish this not only greatly added to my historical knowledge but makes a great story of foreign intrigue; better than anything on TV today.

Absorbing!
By Michael E. Fitzgerald
If you study the American Revolution you are likely to walk away from the experience realizing our independence is owed, in no small part, to France. The French army comprised almost half of Washington's troops at Yorktown and a French fleet defeated an English one off the Virginia capes, preventing Cornwallis's relief and evacuation. French munitions armed the American army and French loans financed the entire American war effort. There simply is no doubt France helped achieve American independence.

But did you realize France sought a formal union with America, with America a vassal state? Or that French generals were ordered to assume command of the American army? That is what the Conway Cabal was all about, replacing George Washington with a French general. France, it seems, was looking to surreptitiously conquer England's former colonies and defeat Britain just as it had attempted to do during the French and Indian War thirteen years earlier.

But there is more, much more to Harlow Unger's fine work. Blocked by Washington, Franklin, et. al., from dominating America's formative years (France actively lobbied against the adoption of the Constitution), France would subsequently attack American shipping, capturing over 800 ships, half of the entire US merchant fleet, before America responded with an undeclared war during the early 1790s. Given the rise of Napoleon and France's continuing wars of global conquest, France would again seek to conquer Louisiana but would end the effort after disease decimated two French armies at Santo Domingo.

Selling Louisiana to the United States almost ended France's dreams of a North American empire. But France would be back, with Maximilian in Mexico, in the mid 1860s. Thwarted yet again by the United States, according to the author France would subsequently embark on a policy of almost maniacal hatred of all things American that extends to this day.

I am not 100% sure about the veracity of this last sentence. It is the author's contention, not mine. But if you read this very worthwhile book, you just might understand how the author came to his conclusion. This is a good, well-researched history combined with sound, deductive reasoning that will leave you scratching your head and wondering just how close to the truth the author may be.

Highly recommended.

Black Moses: The Story of Marcus Garvey and the Universal Negro Improvement Association, by E. David Cronon

In the early twentieth century, Marcus Garvey sowed the seeds of a new black pride and determination. Attacked by the black intelligentsia and ridiculed by the white press, this Jamaican immigrant astonished all with his black nationalist rhetoric.  In just four years, he built the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), the largest and most powerful all-black organization the nation had ever seen.  With hundreds of branches, throughout the United States, the UNIA represented Garvey’s greatest accomplishment and, ironically, the source of his public disgrace.  Black Moses brings this controversial figure to life and recovers the significance of his life and work.

“Those who are interested in the revolutionary aspects of the twentieth century in America should not miss Cronon’s book. It makes exciting reading.”—The Nation

“A very readable, factual, and well-documented biography of Marcus Garvey.”—The Crisis, NAACP

“In a short, swiftly moving, penetrating biography, Mr. Cronon has made the first real attempt to narrate the Garvey story. From the Jamaican's traumatic race experiences on the West Indian island to dizzy success and inglorious failure on the mainland, the major outlines are here etched with sympathy, understanding, and insight.”—Mississippi Valley Historical Review (Now the Journal of American History).

“Good reading for all serious history students.”—Jet

“A vivid, detailed, and sound portrait of a man and his dreams.”—Political Science Quarterly

Decent book on Marcus Garvey.
By Anthony
This Marcus Garvey biography is very short and readable book. This book gives a basic understanding of Marcus Garvey and his Universal Negro Improvement Association. Most of the book is factual and informative and explains Garvey's accomplishments and downfalls. My only criticism is the author E David Cronon is very bias against Garvey. The author does not seem to be able to give an objective assessment of Marcus Garvey. Cronon does not take into account the hostility of the white power structure against Garvey's movement. I would not recommend this book for any Garvey supporter.

Very informative.
By V.K.
This gave an incredible amount of background about a man who is largely ignored in American history. It's sad really, because his grand plans although never realized are exactly what is needed in the black community. Fragments of his teachings have been used/borrowed in later movements, but there hasn't been anyone that had such an impact as he had. It's incredibly impressive when you consider the time period.

Lovely
By Katherine
I love this book, honestly -- Kurt's playful, earnest narration is great, and there are some creative supernatural elements threaded into the story (I like the demonic hoofprints scorched onto the rooftops, the man who burns to death underwater, etc) Given how Nightcrawler's ties to the occult blend with his noble nature and charm, I love seeing him in a position to show off so many aspects of his characterization. Watching this man who can melt into shadows comfort a scared kid and try to commiserate about how "creepy" the lighting is... That's wonderful character work. Nightcrawler himself is great in this, and the ghost-y, demon-y storylines contain some fresh imagery. While it's not perfect, I'd definitely recommend this!

Missing anything interesting!
By S. Penrose
Nightcrawler has always been a favorite character of mine and many others. Sadly, his solo adventures have never been very memorable. Here, Storm, inexplicably sends Kurt by himself to investigate multiple homicides. Kurt, is characterized well, but other X-Men, not so much. The inclusion of Amanda Sefton and the occult are a little too expected. Not much of anything of interest happens and the plot is basic. The art is decent but at times, the female characters look too similar. Overall, not much here.

Good art terrible writing
By Kenneth
Nightcrawler is one of my favorite characters in the Marvel universe. The chance to really explore the duality of his nature and the few shots I saw of the impressive artwork led me to buy this. The writer mr sacsa may be a decent writer for plays but the story and dialog in this was terrible. It sounded like it was written by a third grader. Maybe I have just been reading to much Alan Moore, garth Enis, and Neil Gaimon and have unrealistic expectations for the modern graphic novel writer but I couldnt even make it through the whole story.

Credit where credit is due...the artwork was very vibrant and interesting

The OSS and Ho Chi Minh: Unexpected Allies in the War against Japan (Modern War Studies (Paperback)), by Dixee Bartholomew-Feis

Some will be shocked to find out that the United States and Ho Chi Minh, our nemesis for much of the Vietnam War, were once allies. Indeed, during the last year of World War II, American spies in Indochina found themselves working closely with Ho Chi Minh and other anti-colonial factions—compelled by circumstances to fight together against the Japanese. Dixee Bartholomew-Feis reveals how this relationship emerged and operated and how it impacted Vietnam's struggle for independence.

The men of General William Donovan's newly-formed Office of Strategic Services closely collaborated with communist groups in both Europe and Asia against the Axis enemies. In Vietnam, this meant that OSS officers worked with Ho Chi Minh and the Viet Minh, whose ultimate aim was to rid the region of all imperialist powers, not just the Japanese. Ho, for his part, did whatever he could to encourage the OSS's negative view of the French, who were desperate to regain their colony. Revealing details not previously known about their covert operations, Bartholomew-Feis chronicles the exploits of these allies as they developed their network of informants, sabotaged the Japanese occupation's infrastructure, conducted guerrilla operations, and searched for downed American fliers and Allied POWs.

Although the OSS did not bring Ho Chi Minh to power, Bartholomew-Feis shows that its apparent support for the Viet Minh played a significant symbolic role in helping them fill the power vacuum left in the wake of Japan's surrender. Her study also hints that, had America continued to champion the anti-colonials and their quest for independence, rather than caving in to the French, we might have been spared our long and very lethal war in Vietnam.

Based partly on interviews with surviving OSS agents who served in Vietnam, Bartholomew-Feis's engaging narrative and compelling insights speak to the yearnings of an oppressed people—and remind us that history does indeed make strange bedfellows.

Review
"Bartholomew-Feis frequently lets historical figures speak for themselves and interweaves their words with her elegant narrative and careful analysis."

"An engagingly written book on the OSS in Vietnam that is likely to become the standard account of this complex moment in the American engagement with the postcolonial world."

"By telling the story of these men with a sense of objectivity and with a judicious eye for detail, Bartholomew-Feis has brought a fascinating chapter in U.S.-Vietnamese relations to life."

"The questions the author raises in examining the Viet Minh's war against the Japanese and the French hold their relevance for the modern era as U.S. forces find themselves increasingly working with allies who share a common enemy but not a common end state."

"Specialists as well as general readers interested in intelligence in the Second World War, modern Vietnamese history, and the roots of U.S. involvement in thirty years of subsequent conflict in Indochina will find this book of particular interest.... Highly recommended."

Should be among first book's read
By S. Darragh
There is very little to add to M. Pitcavage's review above other than to recommend that this should be among the very first books read by anyone interested in Vietnam. While Professor Bartholomew-Feis' initial chapters appear to treat Ho Chi Minh as a "nationalist", she presents enough evidence from those who met him that they may judge for themselves. Particularly valuable are the evaluations from Chinese, American, and French sources noting Ho's exceptional charisma, and his unfailing ability to detect what his listeners wanted to hear, and tell them exactly that. And while she does appear to buy into the "French colonialism as unspeakable suffering" school of thought, I would have liked to see at least some statistics to paint a more accurate picture of what it was the French did or failed to do in developing Indochina up until 1940. Likewise, she repeatedly refers to "100 years of colonialism", when in fact it dated from 1864 in Cochinchina, 1884 in Annam (as a protectorate) and from 1884 (protectorate) 1886 (protectorate in highlands, colony in Red River Delta)in Tonkin.

A Minh for all Seasons
By M. Pitcavage
The OSS and Ho Chi Minh, by Dixee Bartholomew-Feis, was an unexpected pleasure. Books written on the OSS or the British equivalent in World War II, SOE, so frequently fall headfirst into a muddy miasma of internal politics, blame and counter-blame, and a fixation on minutiae that they often obscure more than they illuminate. Thankfully, Bartholomew-Feis gives a well-written and lucid account of the OSS in Viet Nam on the cusp between war and peace in 1945. She steps neither into the "Ho was a nationalist and if only they had listened to the OSS then the Vietnam war never would have happened" camp nor into the "Those naive fools helped Ho get to power and brought communism to Southeast Asia" camp, for which every reader should be grateful.

At first, her book gives one pause. She starts off with dual mini-biographies of Ho Chi Minh and F.D.R. and one wonders where on earth she will go with those. However, once she actually gets from contextual background to Vietnam itself, and begins to display the depth of her research and understanding, the book is on much firmer footing. The OSS encountered the Viet Minh in an intelligence-gathering context, so she focuses first on the intelligence networks in Vietnam and how the Allies used them (introducing the reader to a fascinating "free-lance" intelligence network that gave intel to the British, US and Chinese), then shows how the OSS gradually was introduced into this intelligence context. In the process, she illuminates the tensions between the French in Vietnam and the Vietnamese Communists, between north and south Vietnam, and between the Japanese occupiers and both the French and Vietnamese.

Bartholomew-Feis does a good job describing the various OSS missions into Vietnam at the end of the war and the personalities behind them. What is perhaps most striking is how few, how young, and how junior most of these American personnel were, yet the great responsibilities they had in representing their country in matters relating from intelligence to strategy to policy and diplomacy. Almost as fascinating is how, virtually without exception, all of the Americans (conservative and liberal alike) were impressed with Ho Chi Minh, who must positively have oozed charisma. It is quite interesting to compare the personal relationships between the American OSS representatives and Ho and his close collaborators on one hand with the much more bitter, taxing, and dysfunction relations between the British and Tito (see Dedjier's diaries on his views of the British, for example) or the British and the Albanian communists or the British and the Greek communists. Perhaps the only real comparison is with Mao Zedong who managed to win over a bevy of Westerners from left-wing reporters like Edgar Snow and Agnes Smedley to Marine officers like Evans Carlson. In any case, it is quite interesting to see how genuinely friendly the Vietnamese were towards the Americans, more so than almost all of the other communist movements with which the OSS worked.

Bartholomew-Feis does write, rather often, of how the Vietnamese "manipulated" the Americans, yet some of the incidents of which she writes sound not so much as a deliberate underhanded manipulation so much as they seem a genuine (if perhaps temporary) convergence of interests. She is on firmer footing when she describes how the Vietminh used their rather tenuous official contacts with the United States as a way to gain status and legitimacy. The Vietminh were quite clever in that regard.

Overall, Bartholomew-Feis does an excellent job in covering a difficult and--given the fact that any book on this is heavily burdened with foreshadowing to begin with--sensitive subject. It would have been nice to have seen more use of Vietnamese sources but overall the book is well-researched and Bartholomew-Feis demonstrates a considerable grasp of her subject.

I have read scores of books on the OSS and SOE dealing with various resistance movements in World War II and I think this is definitely one of the better ones. Scholars and general readers interested in intelligence gathering during World War II, the origins of the Indochina War, Vietnamese nationalism, and the end of the Second World War will all be interested in this well-written study. I recommend it.

An Important, Often Overlooked Time in US Foreign and Defense Policy
By Rob Bittick
This is a very well written and researched book about a short time at the end of WWII when Ho Chi Minh and the Viet Minh were allies with the US against the Imperial Japanese. The author explores the relationships between OSS personnel and the Viet Minh very well. I recommend this book to those who have an interest in US Foreign and Defense Policy during World War II concerning French Indochina (especially intelligence), what lead up to the later French (1950s) and US (1960s and 1970s) conflicts in Viet Nam, and in the history of Viet Nam in general.

This book raised several questions in my mind:
Was Ho Chi Minh:
- using the US to achieve his political goals?
- naive about the incompatibility of communism with US civil society?
- sincere about his admiration of the United States?
I came away from this book with the conclusion that the answer to all three is, yes. However, the author makes it clear that Ho Chi Minh was a true communist, and that independence from foreign rule was his supreme goal in whatever he did.

Also, reading about the US OSS training the Viet Minh reminded me of the US CIA later training the mujahideen in the USSR-Afghan war. In both cases, the US ended up fighting their former allies in a different time and different political context.

I also found it interesting that some Japanese soldiers may have deserted and help train the Viet Minh after Japan surrendered.

There are other interested facts about this time that makes reading this book worthwhile.

Crazy Bosses: Fully Revised and Updated, by Stanley Bing

Since the latter part of the century just past, Stanley Bing has been exploring the relationship between authority and madness. In one bestselling book after another, reporting from his hot-seat as an insider in a world-renowned multinational corporation, he has tried to understand the inner workings of those who lead us and to inquire why they seem to be powered, much of the time, by demons that make them obnoxious and dangerous, even to themselves.

In What Would Machiavelli Do?, Bing looked at the issue of why mean people do better than nice people, and found that in their particular form of insanity lay incredible power. In Throwing the Elephant: Zen and the Art of Managing Up, he offered a spiritual path toward managing the unruly executive beast. And in Sun Tzu Was a Sissy, he taught us how to become one of them, and wage war on the playing field that ends in a dream home in Cabo. Now he returns to his roots to offer the last word on the entity that shapes our lives and stomps through—and on—our dreams: The Crazy Boss.

Students of Bing—and there are many, secreted inside tortured organizations, yearning for blunt instruments with which to fight—will note that he has walked this ground before, looking for answers. In 1992, he published the first edition of Crazy Bosses, which was fine, as far as it went. Now, some 15 years and several dozen insane bosses later, he has updated and rethought much of the work. Back in the last century, Bing was a small, trembling creature, looking up at those who made his life miserable and analyzing the mental illness that gave them their power. Today, while still trembling much of the time, he is in fact one of those people his prior work has warned us against. His own hard-won wisdom and now institutionalized dementia make this new edition completely fresh and indispensable to anyone who works for somebody else or lives with somebody else, or would like to.

In short, Bing is back on his home turf in this funny, true, and essential book, peering with his keen and frosty eye at the crazy boss in all his guises: the Bully, the Paranoid, the Narcissist, the Wimp, and the self-destructive Disaster Hunter. If you loved the original, classic Crazy Bosses, you'll be thrilled to plunge back into the new, refurbished pool. If you are new to the book, strap yourself in: it's going to be a crazy ride.

From Library Journal
Bing, who writes Esquire magazine's "Executive Summary" column, analyzes a slice of corporate culture gone mad--the interpersonal dynamics of working with a crazy boss. He first describes the process of a typical initiate entering the corporate world with a general set of perceptions which may be out of sync with the underlying mechanisms that govern the behavior of corporate players. Through the use of anecdotes generalized to portray recurring themes, Bing describes the various kinds of crazy bosses: the boss with the five brains, the bully, the paranoid boss, the narcissist, the "bureaucrazy," and the disaster hunter. Chapter subheadings range from clever to cutesy, making it difficult to refer back to particular sections of his discussion. However, Bing ends each chapter with concrete strategies to cope with each type of crazy boss. Recommended for general business collections.

I've had my share...
By Nana Annie
....of Crazy Bosses! Not only did I have them, I'm sure I was one, too - there's nothing like a corporate environment to bring out interesting tendencies in anyone. When I received an anonymous e-mail at work, with excerpts from this book, I had to have it!
Easy to read, written with wit and actual substance, this book (predecessor to the very popular "Who Moved My Cheese?" and "When Smart People Work for Dumb Bosses") helped get me through some difficult times.
If you can't just stop working to do something you really enjoy -- and not many can, aside from Dilbert's Scott Adams and me -- this book is like an emotional teddy bear with teeth. He defines different "Crazy Bosses" by behavior (most of us are a mix), reasons why they may be that way, and practical ways to work with them, because most of aren't likely to get away from them, even if we change corporations and bosses.
The truth most of us don't want to know is that the insanity of the business world is ours to deal with, not management's to fix. There is no one coming to the rescue - and we each play our own part to the madness, by our own responses. This book is a good aid with suggestions on what to do and what NOT to do, to survive.
We have to rely on our own emotional and physical health, friends, a sense of humor and a sense of our own self-worth (aside from work) so we won't feel like a victim.
The book I found the most helpful throughout my corporate life - and it was great in my real life, too - was M. Scott Peck's "The Road Less Traveled." "Life is difficult," and once we figure that out, we can get on with living! If you are feeling like a victim, read these books and start a discussion with a friend or two!
Good luck - and rest assured that there *is* life after work!

You Know, You Hate, You Are Them...Now Read About Them
By Anthony G Pizza
Seemingly written as post-game analysis following an 80s decade of mega mergers, business bungles and greed approval at every level, Stanley Bing's 1992 "Crazy Bosses" was and remains an instructive, if flabbily written and weakly humorous survival guide to dealing with authority's abuse in all forms.
Esquire columnist Bing wears his liberal business and political opinions on his sleeve. References to Nixon, the Reagans, and to candidate Gary Hart abound (the book also features an odd Oliver North analogy). He also name-checks notorious 80s figures like Michael Milken, Ivan Boesky, Jim Bakker, and even Lou Holtz. While some of Bing's many anonymous testimonials shock and surprise (especially one on an alcoholic boss with a surprise happy ending representing his best writing here) many seem like workplace whining from people you also would not wish to work with, let alone for.
Bing properly blames psychotic boss behavior and its effects (obsessive perfectionism, unfair preferences, inconsistent policies) on need for short-term profits, demand to create and chart corporate culture, sycophants who feed need and ego of the powerful (making converts along the way), which in turn exert it over those beneath by stealing time, thought, and morale. Bing delves into these areas with some humor but often unneeded commentaries after quotes that speak well on their own. Yet his comments on workaholism, which in his chapter "Diaster Hunter" he groups with alcoholism, drug abuse, and sexual harrassment, properly expose that trait for the character and family-breaking flaw it is.
Although Bing's recent "What Would Machiavelli Do?" seems to cover similar subject matter with more pointed humor, "Crazy Bosses," with a 90s rewrite, could remain a useful reference to those needing instruction and reinforcement in the workplace. No employee, whether working for Ebeneezer Scrooge or Al Dunlap, is ever their job. Bing's book reminds its readers of this fact, and is recommended reading where you find it.

A superb graduate class in business
By bizwrite@swbell.net
Find this book, read it, keep it tucked under your pillow. It is full of wit, humor, insight . . . and more than a dash of morbid truth. Well-written, it is the kind of book that management professors should have as required reading. This is one of two books that every serious student of business should have in his or her library; the other is "You Can Win at Office Politics," by Dr. Robert Bell. Somehow they are both first-rate writing and first-rate philosophy. Don't say you weren't warned!
