The smartphone in your pocket can easily be turned into a high-tech spy tool and counter-surveillance device to rival anything that Ian Fleming’s Q might have dreamt up.

You can communicate secretly, browse the web anonymously, access the Deep Web and hidden networks, view banned content, download privately and continue using Twitter and Facebook if their services are ever blocked locally.

Conversely, mobile devices are not secure unless you make them so. If somebody wants to know where you are at this precise moment, your smartphone will tell them – even if it is turned off.

The push by the commercial world and more recently by law enforcement and surveillance agencies to monitor all we do has led to a counter-revolution. The Mobile Internet has evolved and so has its counter-surveillance tools.

Rather like spies in a James Bond movie, mobile users have an array of digital tools to call upon, both to mask their identity and to provide real confidence that their correspondence, data and contacts are secure.

There are smartphone apps that let you see in the dark or measure the height of a building. You can film and record without being rumbled; send emails, PMs and SMS that cannot be intercepted or read. You can even take over and control many public and private security cameras.

Conrad Jaeger writes the weekly blog Techtivist.com and is the author of ‘Deep Web Secrecy and Security also available on Amazon.

Moon: A Brief History, by Bernd Brunner

Werewolves and Wernher von Braun, Stonehenge and the sex lives of sea corals, aboriginal myths, and an Anglican bishop: In his new book, Moon, Bernd Brunner weaves variegated information into an enchanting glimpse of Earth’s closest celestial neighbor, whose mere presence inspires us to wonder what might be “out there.”

Going beyond the discoveries of contemporary science, Brunner presents an unusual cultural assessment of our complex relationship with Earth’s lifeless, rocky satellite. As well as offering an engaging perspective on such age-old questions as “What would Earth be like without the moon?” Brunner surveys the moon’s mythical and religious significance and provokes existential soul-searching through a lunar lens, inquiring, “Forty years ago, the first man put his footprint on the moon. Will we continue to use it as the screen onto which we cast our hopes and fears?”

Drawing on materials from different cultures and epochs, Brunner walks readers down a moonlit path illuminated by more than seventy-five vintage photographs and illustrations. From scientific discussions of the moon’s origins and its “chronobiological” effects on the mating and feeding habits of animals to an illuminating interpretation of Bishop Francis Godwin’s 1638 novel The Man in the Moone, Brunner’s ingenious and interdisciplinary explorations recast a familiar object in an entirely original and unforgettable light and will change the way we view the nighttime sky.

Review
"[An] elegant cultural history. . . .Brunner ably dispatches recent science . . . and takes us on a lively tour of lunar folklore and speculative fiction."—The New Yorker (The New Yorker 2011-01-03)

“. . . a nimble, fast-moving survey of the silvery moon’s impact upon us and our world. Brunner looks at the moon’s influence upon tides, of course, and also its place in early psychology, the occult, popular culture and as a necessary first step on humanity’s journey to Mars.”—Nick Owchar,Los AngelesTimes (Nick Owchar Los Angeles Times 2011-03-09)

"Astronomers, geologists, rocketeers and space jockeys all have a practical interest in the Moon, but earthbound mortals look up and project all their fears and fantasies on to its pale surface. Without it our tides would not ebb and flow, our poetry would be the poorer, our nights would be dark and we would not believe in werewolves baying in the fullness of its face. We know perfectly well that the Moon is a cold, rocky, lifeless little satellite, but where’s the romance in that? Brunner shows how it has shone silver through our dreams and destinies. It is the inspiration for myths and marvels and may be a kicking-off point for a further jump into space."—Kate Saunders, The Times (London) (Kate Saunders The Times (London))

“Brunner encapsulates this sense of mystery about the moon in a relative short and accessible work. A useful introduction to its cultural history.”—Roger Launius, Senior Curator, Division of Space History, National Air and Space Museum Smithsonian Institution

(Roger Launius 2010-01-30)

"Eclectic, entertaining and sometimes esoteric!"—Sean Johnston, author of History of Science, A Beginner's Guide

(Sean Johnston 2010-06-30)

“Moon is an enjoyable romp through the various fields of lunar lore, including its history as an object of curiosity, worship, and study. Fun and fast-paced!”—Dr. Paul D. Spudis, author of The Once and Future Moon

(Paul D. Spudis 2010-07-16)

"An intriguing literary expedition to our nearest neighbor in space."—Patricia Fara, author of Science: A Four Thousand Year History

(Patricia Fara 2010-07-16)

'Brunner's perky cultural history - of the Moon in superstition, song, and indeed science - encompasses many wonderful things both imaginary (inhabitants including man-bats or cat-women) and actual (strange lights known as "lunar transient phenomena", or the burial on the Moon of an American geologist's ashes).' — Steven Poole, The Guardian (Steven Poole The Guardian 2011-03-19)

"Readable and appealingly illustrated."—The Bookseller (The Bookseller 2010-10-30)

"There are plenty of arresting facts and ideas, and it is these that will give Moon its appeal to readers of popular science and history."—Lorien Kaye, The Age (Lorien Kaye The Age 2011-01-09)

"This appealing little volume must surely be the most eccentric book of the year. But then isn’t that appropriate, given that the subject is the Moon?"—Clive Aslet, Country Life (Clive Aslet Country Life 2011-01-05)

"In his new book, Moon, Brunner weaves variegated information into an enchanting glimpse of Earth's closest celestial neighbor. . . . Brunner's ingenious and interdisciplinary explorations recast a familiar object in an entirely original and unforgettable light and will change the way we view the nighttime sky."—Lunar and Planetary Information Bulletin (Lunar and Planetary Information Bulletin)

"I deeply recommend this book to anyone who has ever looked for The Man in the Moon, and wondered, even for a moment, why it has taken us so long to consider going back for a return visit."—Brad Wright, Portland Book Review (Brad Wright Portland Book Review)

"In Bernd Brunner's. . . volume dealing with the moon, we are plunged immediately into a fascinating tour of the moon in ancient cultures. . . . well written, . . . full of fascinating bits of information."—James Trefil, Washington Post (James Trefil Washington Post 2011-01-03)

"Bernd Brunner serves up a learned but fluently written almanac of things lunar, with less emphasis on the science of the whirling orb than on the uses we have made of it in art, literature, folklore and the imagination over time."—Greg McNamee, Kirkus Reviews (Greg McNamee Kirkus Reviews 2010-12-03)

"Many books cover moon science; many others concentrate on the mythology, folklore, and cultural aspects surrounding it. Brunner's does this and more, giving readers a thorough, entertaining look at people as much as at the moon. ... A valuable book for anyone with an interest in Earth's companion." —CHOICE (CHOICE)

“The book is a tour de force on the relationship between man and the moon, giving equal attention to science, poetry, and mythology, while still including a welcome body of miscellanea. It quickly becomes clear that the scientific history of the moon is inseparable from the popular ideas of its composition and also that now and then even serious scientists develop especially curious projections far in advance of literary fantasy when describing the lunar inhabitants.”—Tilman Spreckelsen, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (Tilman Spreckelsen Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung 2011-09-15)

“Brunner is a good non-fiction author for a broad readership. He refrains from pelting us with technical terms, while still giving the impression that he has a good command of his topic. He is particularly attracted to the relationships between nature and culture. (…) He often manages to provide vivid descriptions: he lets scientists from several centuries speak about the moon, tells stories of healing and ritual regarding the night’s heavenly body, and dovetails the history of the moon film with the Cold War.”—Lars von der Gnna, Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (Lars von der Gonna Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung 2011-09-15)

“… one will find here a feast of historical connection and reactions to the moon.” —San Francisco Book Review (San Francisco Book Review)

“…a nimble, fast-moving survey of the silvery moon’s impact upon us and our world. Brunner looks at the moon’s influence upon tides, of course, and also its place in early psychology, the occult, popular culture and as a necessary first step on humanity’s journey to Mars.” —Nick Owchar, Los AngelesTimes (Nick Owchar Los Angeles Times)

“A wry compendium of all things moon-related, this enjoyable book takes in everything from the popular song “Blue Moon” to Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon, from Georges Melies’s pioneering film A Trip to the Moon to Kubrick’s 2001 and Duncan Jones’s Moon.”—The Guardian (The Guardian 2011-12-10)

Selected as a Choice Outstanding Academic Title for 2011 in the Astronautics and Astronomy category. (Choice Outstanding Academic Title Choice 2012-03-12)

"Superb non-fiction books. ... They are archives unto themselves. A repository for dreams, visions, and fears."—Die Zeit (Die Zeit)

Good little book.
By C. Plaia
The information presented was obviously carefully chosen, and covers lots of ground for a not-very-big-book. I have one little complaint: I found the type a little too fancy for easy reading. The strangely designed question marks were especially distracting.

About the Author
For more than 30 years, Stuart McRobert has revealed how to achieve bodybuilding and strength training success. He has done this through his books, about 700 articles in newsstand muscle magazines, and 15 years as the editor of HARDGAINER, a bodybuilding magazine.

This blue-ribbon author is one of the most respected writers in the genre of weight training. Although Stuart has been extensively published in the mainstream bodybuilding world, his guidance is most definitely not mainstream. Conventional training methods don't work well for most trainees.

McRobert is not an armchair coach. Without drugs, and with just normal genetics, he built 45 pounds of muscle, transformed his physique, and deadlifted 400 pounds for a set of 20 reps. He still practices what he teaches, and as he approaches age 60 he continues to be strong, lean, flexible, and fit.

Stuart has a degree in education, over 40 years experience of training himself, over 30 years experience of guiding others, and is the author of five books on physique transformation: BRAWN, BEYOND BRAWN, THE INSIDER’S TELL-ALL HANDBOOK ON WEIGHT-TRAINING TECHNIQUE, BUILD MUSCLE LOSE FAT LOOK GREAT, and the first book of the NEW BRAWN SERIES: HOW TO BUILD UP TO 50 POUNDS OF MUSCLE THE NATURAL WAY.

Chuck Miller has trained with weights for over 30 years, and competed in strength sports for over 20 years, always drug-free. He has won multiple regional and national powerlifting championships, and totaled Raw Elite three times—twice in the 198-pound class and, most recently, at 220.

Chuck made these achievements despite two major challenges: He is a type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetic, and he overcame a tibial plateau fracture in his left knee at age 38 that required a plate and five screws to correct.

Chuck has trained elite athletes, military special forces personnel, and average Joes and Jills. He has also written dozens of articles for respected strength-training journals.

In addition to his ample in-the-trenches experience, Chuck is committed to lifelong learning. He has maintained the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) credential since passing the rigorous exam in 1997. He attended West Virginia University for his post-secondary education, obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism in 1991, a JD in 1994, and an MBA in 1995. He passed the West Virginia bar exam and is licensed to practice law, although his career is in management and his passion is strength.

HARD work - works!!!
By drums1959
Fan's of Stuart McRobert and his magazine Hardgainer will love this book. This book covers a lot of ground. Especially useful for
less experienced trainees. Good stuff in here for the more advanced trainer as well - particularly the chapters Chuck Miller dedicated to
his powerlifting training career. A great book on ALL the specifics of HARD training, how to set up a program, how to keep getting gains
from a program. These programs on paper may not look that difficult to many because of the limited number of sets. Try running thru these
programs for awhile where the emphasis is on barbells/dumbells - NO MACHINES, exercises which hit the core and multiple muscles per
lift, therefore calling for HEAVY weights no matter the rep range worked. RESULTS can be yours following the advice in this book.

A Top Read by An Expert on Effective, Brief, Safe Training
By Richard Winett
Walk into any gym or health club around the world, and no matter the years of training, gender, or age of the people you see training, they all can greatly benefit from Stuart McRobert's latest work. Presented in an extended interview format, the book covers every aspect of training and nutrition. There are many points from McRobert's excellent prior books and the 15 years of his Hard Gainer magazine. But, there also are new and timely insights. Basically, this book provides an important wake up call to, literally, people around the world. We can be more effective in our training by training less often and with many fewer sets, training harder, and training more safely, and carefully attending to nutrition and recovery. It is difficult to discern what one's true potential is unless you are training effectively and this book provides the details about how to do just that in a very accessible format. In addition, McRobert provides some personal disclosures that will make all of us consider the role that exercise plays in our life.

Get ready to take your mass, power, and training knowledge to a new level!
By Nathan G. Harvey
It's impossible for me to write a review that would truly sum up the genius of this book, the staggering training wisdom that it contains, or the nostalgia that reading it set off inside of me.

I just wish that I would have known it's contents, and that of Stuart's other books and publications, back when I was a young teen trying to figure out how I was going to fit Bill Pearl's giant workouts into my life. I wanted so badly to be a football star, but that's hard to do when you barely tip the scales at 130 lbs. The HIT recommendations of Darden and Jones helped some, but after some initial gains, I stagnated with workouts that were too long, despite pushing myself to absolute failure on every set. I felt guilty after every workout, convinced that if I had really worked hard enough I wouldn't be stuck at the same size and strength levels. Much of my weight and strength gain was probably due to normal growth, and although good speed and strength for my size helped me to be fairly successful as a high school athlete, I peaked at a top bodyweight of 170 lbs, and my dreams of stardom never came true.

It wasn't until my mid twenties that I came across Stuart's books and Hardgainer magazine, and it was both a complete revelation and the beginning of a wonderful period of my life. I discovered workouts that actually fit into my life, led to clockwork gains without the guilt of wondering if I had tried hard enough, and didn't require me to endure pain that made every workout a miserable affair. Within two years I tipped the scales at more than 230 lbs. and had pushed my strength far beyond my earlier levels. I met friends and mentors on the forum, wrote articles for the magazine, and enjoyed the heck out of the whole process. Chuck's interview of Stuart reminds me of much that happened back then. I just wish that it all took place when I was still playing competitive sports.

I think that Chuck and Marty's input about powerlifting, and elite athletes, are a wonderful complement to Stuart's discussion of what works for drug-free, genetically typical trainees. We usually read that there are no secrets in training, but I think that their combined efforts actually served as an expose' of sorts, showing that many elite lifters have reached their staggering success through training programs so intentionally brief that it's hard to believe. If you have avoided McRobert's teachings in the past because you didn't want to associate with 98 lb. weaklings who do nothing but whine about their fragile bone structures, Chuck and Marty's input will show you that you have nothing to fear, and much to gain.

To sum up, I think that this is a great book for anyone who is looking for intelligent guidelines that will help them to reach a new level of size and strength, or anyone who would like to know more "behind the scenes" information about the Hardgainer years.

Well done, Chuck and Stuart!

Guardians of Finance: Making Regulators Work for Us, by James R. Barth, Gerard Caprio Jr., Ross Levine

The recent financial crisis was an accident, a "perfect storm" fueled by an unforeseeable confluence of events that unfortunately combined to bring down the global financial systems. Or at least this is the story told and retold by a chorus of luminaries that includes Timothy Geithner, Henry Paulson, Robert Rubin, Ben Bernanke, and Alan Greenspan.

In Guardians of Finance, economists James Barth, Gerard Caprio, and Ross Levine argue that the financial meltdown of 2007 to 2009 was no accident; it was negligent homicide. They show that senior regulatory officials around the world knew or should have known that their policies were destabilizing the global financial system and yet chose not to act until the crisis had fully emerged.

Barth, Caprio, and Levine propose a reform to counter this systemic failure: the establishment of a "Sentinel" to provide an informed, expert, and independent assessment of financial regulation. Its sole power would be to demand information and to evaluate it from the perspective of the public--rather than that of the financial industry, the regulators, or politicians.

Review

This book will become a classic for those who want to learn what was behind the global financial crisis -- not just what went wrong, but why current reforms won't work. Most important, it offers guidelines to prevent the next crisis by forcing regulators, the Guardians of Finance, to work for the public interest rather than for narrow elites.

(Nouriel Roubini, Co-Founder and Chairman, Roubini Global Economics)

This book involves a strongly, even passionately, argued attack on financial regulators for having made a mess of financial regulation, prior to 2007. It is beautifully written, and very well designed to achieve a wide audience of readers who are interested in the crisis, but are not necessarily themselves expert. It is based on great academic expertise, but wears its deep scholarship lightly, with no maths and no equations.

(Charles Goodhart, London School of Economics)

There have been plenty of books on the financial crisis. But this one is different. While acknowledging that private financiers did plenty of damage, the authors shine the spotlight on regulators across the world. They argue that the crisis did not just happen to policymakers, it happened because of them, and offer careful and well-reasoned arguments to support their case. Guardians of Finance should be read by everyone interested in the future of free enterprise.

(Raghuram G. Rajan, The University of Chicago Booth School of Business)

Financial crises are not in the interests of bankers, regulators, or politicians. Yet all three groups did nothing as the U.S. financial system headed over a cliff. Why didn't they act? Why did their counterparts in other countries, such as Ireland and Iceland, also stick their heads in the sand? Is there a way to prevent the next crisis, or do we have to rely on the same groups that brought us the ongoing disaster of 2007? Read this meticulously researched and clearly argued book, and learn the answers.

(Stephen Haber, Stanford University)

This is a timely, well-written, and nontechnical book by established experts in the field.

(R.Grossman, Choice)

For those involved in policy formulation and regulation, whether at national or international level, in government or financial institutions, this is compulsory reading.

(Richard Parlour, Central Banking Journal)

Wonderfully Informative
By Oscar
Wow. You just don't get this information and insight from the talking heads and the politicians. This clear and readable book is written by top-notch economists who educate us about what happened in the recent financial crisis; what is happening in the financial system; and it reviews financial regulation. The book makes a strong case of how officials are abusing their power and not working for the public at large and it suggests a way to fix the fundamental problems. It really gets at the heart of the issue by examining the roots of the global financial crisis that were building since the mid-1990s, rather than just telling stories about who did what after Lehman Brothers failed. This book teaches us about what is driving the problems and with that understanding the authors' propose solutions. It is a unique advance beyond the previous literature about the recent financial crisis.

Extremely insightful
By marshall
I came to the topic of financial crisis with lots of misconceptions and held on to them until I read that book (actually drafts of this book) when taking a class with Prof. Caprio. Using ample evidence, the authors convincingly questioned the conventional wisdom that universal banking or financial liberalization is the ill of the problem, and debunked regulators' claim that the financial crisis is a perfect storm, not due to failed regulation. They pointed to the center of the problem--distorted incentive goes unregulated. The authors' writing are strikingly clear and explained the issue crystal clear. Highly recommend!

The only sad thing of reading the book is that one would recognize the recent reforms like macro-prudential regulations do not address the real problem--distorted incentives, and we could expect another financial crisis, more costly.

Fantastic book
By Eric
This is a fantastic book that provides expert understanding of financial regulators' role in the recent crisis in an easy-to-read and accessible way. The book makes learning about financial regulation exciting and highly enjoyable. The intricacies of financial regulation described in the book are fascinating and often unsettling.

Guardians of Finance does not simply blame Wall Street or Main Street for the crisis. Rather, the book takes a nuanced approach, examining how poor regulatory decisions and structure created incentives that promoted actions leading to the crisis. Additionally, the authors propose a new regulatory structure to help align the behavior of financial regulators with the public interest.

The book analyzes complex problems in an informative and readable manner accessible to anyone. This is a phenomenal read for anyone who wishes to better understand the role played by financial regulators in the recent financial crisis, what went wrong, and how we can fix it.

Larry Hama returns to his original series with all-new stories!
By Ernest Robertson
From 1982 to 1994 Larry Hama wrote the legendary "G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero!" series published by Marvel. The series stopped with #155. (These issues are currently being reprinted in the "Classic G.I. Joe" trades by IDW.)

Fast-forward to May 2010. IDW released #155.5 as a freebie for "Free Comic Book Day." Here Larry Hama picked up the story right where he had left off over 15 years earlier. In July 2010 the series officially reopened with #156, and has been going strong with new monthly installments since. Same writer, same continuity, same issue numbering - this is the definitive continuation of the classic Marvel run!

This trade collects #155.5 thru #160, and is called "volume 1" because these are the first issues published by IDW that continue the original Marvel story.

The Joe team has been disbanded, and Cobra attempts to hunt some of the key members (Hawk, Duke, Snake-Eyes, Scarlett, Roadblock, Stalker, Mainframe, Rock N Roll) down. The Joes reunite and strike back. Great stuff!

I gave this volume 4 stars because #157 and #160 drag a little and the art isn't the best I've seen for G.I. Joe. I don't mean this as a slam against Augustin Padilla, but I just feel that his style isn't right for this genre. (However, starting in #161 SL Gallant took over the art chores and his work is PERFECT. His amazing work will be featured in the next trade, but sadly not in this one.) Despite my complaints this volume is over all a total blast to read. Nobody writes the Joes like Hama!

For #156 and forward each issue has been printed with three cover variations, one of them being a sketch by Larry Hama. (The Hama sketch covers are difficult to find.) This trade features an excellent cover gallery in the back where we get full page reproductions of all three covers for #156 - #160. Very cool - especially the Hama sketch covers.

To have Larry Hama back on his original Marvel story-line is a dream come true! YO JOE!

A refreshing update to a classic tale
By Eugene M. Roby
I have recently started to collect the classic GI Joe comics from the 1980's run. I recommend these stories to anyone reading this review. A year or two ago, IDW (the current publsher of the GI Joe comics) asked Larry Hama, the writer and part-time illustrator of the classic series, to come back and publish new stories set in the GI joe universe of the classic comics,as a result we got GI Joe a Real American Hero.

This is the first volume of this new series, and it kicks it off pretty well. After reading this volume I am going to be collecting them all as they come out.

In my opinion, GI Joe A Real American Hero, is the perfect blend of classic 1980's comic book writing and modern art. It is great to see a modern comic book story with all the classic Joes just the way I remember them when I was a kid.

I introduced my 11 year old son, to both the classic series, and this relaunch, and he likes the relaunch better. I think this new series does a great job of introducing GI Joe to a new generation, without compromising the integrity of these characters.

In short this series does a great job of bridging the gap between 1986 and 2012. For a GI Joe fan, this would be my recommendation, if you were limited to reading only one of the modern era GI Joe comics. Well, now you know, and knowing is half the battle. Yo Joe!

Maybe you can't go home again
By Kid Kyoto
I was over the moon when I heard that Larry Hama was returning to GI Joe and picking off exactly where he left off in the 1990s. His GI Joe run from the 80s and 90s is one of my favorites of all time and I've been enjoying the IDW reprints.

I know this opinion won't be popular but the first volume falls far short of the original run.

The premise is great, after Cobra stages terrorist attacks the U.S. declares martial law and hires 'security contractors' like Arbco Systems and Coordinated Order By Righteous Americans (one guess who they really are) to keep the peace. It's a brilliant combination of right wing and left wing paranoia and hands Cobra their greatest victory yet. Soon Cobra troopers in full uniform are shooting people in the streets.

But the execution is just sloppy. In the first few pages we have General Hawk shooting a policeman in the face. Sure he's a Cobra-controlled cop, but still it's a distasteful way to start. Later Roadblock hacks up several government agents (yeah, yeah, Cobra-loyal agents) with a meat cleaver. It's implied that Stalker tortured a Cobra trooper off-camera. Everything feels just too grim and dark, and not at all fun.

And then the interesting scenario is wrapped up in just a few pages with no real impact.

Agustin Padilla's art is also ill suited for Hama's usual stories. He often draws the Joes superhero-style standing in the open charging right into enemy fire. Other artists drew them more like real-world soldiers, taking cover, choosing their shots carefully. At no point does it feel like the Joes are in danger, their main complaint is running low on ammo.

If this was the only book I bought I would have dropped the series. Fortunately with book 2 things pick up nicely. Hama rediscovers his sense of humor, we see some of the gadgets and vehicles come back and the art improves nicely. Book 1 is not bad but really fell short of the original run.

The SuperCollider Book (MIT Press), by Scott Wilson, David Cottle, Nick Collins, James McCartney

SuperCollider is one of the most important domain-specific audio programming languages, with potential applications that include real-time interaction, installations, electroacoustic pieces, generative music, and audiovisuals. The SuperCollider Book is the essential reference to this powerful and flexible language, offering students and professionals a collection of tutorials, essays, and projects. With contributions from top academics, artists, and technologists that cover topics at levels from the introductory to the specialized, it will be a valuable sourcebook both for beginners and for advanced users. SuperCollider, first developed by James McCartney, is an accessible blend of Smalltalk, C, and further ideas from a number of programming languages. Free, open-source, cross-platform, and with a diverse and supportive developer community, it is often the first programming language sound artists and computer musicians learn. The SuperCollider Book is the long-awaited guide to the design, syntax, and use of the SuperCollider language. The first chapters offer an introduction to the basics, including a friendly tutorial for absolute beginners, providing the reader with skills that can serve as a foundation for further learning. Later chapters cover more advanced topics and particular topics in computer music, including programming, sonification, spatialization, microsound, GUIs, machine listening, alternative tunings, and non-real-time synthesis; practical applications and philosophical insigh"s from the composer's and artist's perspectives; and "under the hood," developer's-eye views of SuperCollider's inner workings. A Web site accompanying the book offers code, links to the application itself and its source code, and a variety of third-party extras, extensions, libraries, and examples.

Review

This book documents the SuperCollider language to an extent never before achieved and shows how it can be used to realize a wide variety of musical and technical applications. The scholarship is sound, as the chapter authors are leaders in the field and deeply knowledgeable on how SuperCollider may be used, taught, and learned.

An Amazing Achievement !
By Peter A. Scartabello
I have been using Supercollider since the first release in 1996. Since then it has become 'open source' and has (as it's creator James McCartney says in the introduction) taken on a life of it's own. Multitudes of creative minds in the field of computer music have added to the code and have made it such a rich and wonderful programming environment to work in. I am primarily a composer of acoustic chamber works, but what I have always liked about Supercollider is it efficiency. It has always seemed less cumbersome to me than CSound, and right out of the gate you are creating complex and interesting sounds with a minimal amount of code. In the spirit of Supercollider itself, the book is not written by one person but is authored by the top Supercollider gurus and practitioners from around the world. It starts with a straightforward tutorial by David Cottle and progresses quickly to more complex and specific subjects like granular synthesis and machine listening. But you will find, even from the preliminary code, that you are creating amazing, timbrally rich sounds. This book is a great achievement!!! We have waited a long time for this! Anyone who is interested in Supercollider and computer music needs this book!!

Excellent resource, not quite perfect.
By David L. Phillips
This book is a treasure trove for anyone interested in SC. The writing style throughout is accessible and enthusiastic, and the quality of information is truly impressive. Of course, any book like this one suffers from the rapid pace of software development, so some information is already outdated. However, as far as I can tell all the examples are useful as-is (barring system-specific dependencies). The book is not organized as a progressive series of tutorials, so the newcomer may seem a bit bewildered by the array of SC's possibilities and how best to go about learning them. I suggest the complete beginner read Cottle chapter to get started, then just jump into the other chapters as they become of interest.

I've used SC with Linux on & off over the past years. The SC Book has been a great inspiration for me to get back into this wonderful language - I'm primarily a Csound-based composer, but I'm always on the look-out for interesting developments in similar languages and systems. Btw, the only reason I didn't give it five stars is the absence of an accompanying disc, but in truth it isn't necessary, the book will guide you to all necessary resources. So okay, I'm really giving it four and a half stars. :)

Sc bible
By tripnikk
This is the bible. It goes over supercollider inside and out. The beginning is quite rocky as they seem to start giving you examples which aren't well explained. Be prepared for some hair pulling. Regardless, this book along with some supplemental tutorials in the internet will get you going.
