Cocteau's Masterpiece of Imagination and Longing

Cocteau's novel is gem of a book which deals with the power of make-believe to transport the characters into worlds of their own making. Specifically, Les Enfants Terribles tells the story of a brother and sister who, after the death of their mother, create a sanctuary in one enchanted room and via their active imaginations. These fantasies become the axis on which their lives revolve until it spirals out of control and ends in a climax befitting a Greek tragedy. Reading this book is like reliving a fever dream in which the reality and fantasy blur.

Bizarre, ridiculous...yet, absolutely wonderful

When I read the synopsis of the book, I was highly intrigued and bought it on the spot. But when I started reading the first chapter of the book, I thought I had gotten stuck with the most ridiculous book on the planet.

The first chapter involves Paul getting hit with a snowball (with a stone hidden inside it) to the chest by his crush/obsession, the feminine-looking Dargelos. Apparently, Paul becomes so ill that he is bed-ridden and advised by the doctor not to go back to school - or leave the house - leaving his sister to not only care for him, but for their sick mother as well. End of the chapter, "The Game" is revealed, which can only be played in their shared bedroom, and it involves the siblings trying to annoy each other until one of them leaves the contest with the last word, ideally having caused a display of angry frustration from the other.

Having read all that, I sat there thinking what a ridiculous, silly book this is. How soft is this boy that he can't go back to school? And with Paul obsessing over Dargelos (sobbing uncontrollably upon knowing he won't be able to see him again because he can't go back to school), and Gerard obsessing over Paul, I was left with the impression that they were homosexual. Only to have Gerard develop an infatuation with Elizabeth soon after, which left me confused.

I realized, halfway through the second chapter, that I needed to stop over-analyzing and instead delve into the story until I am lost in it. That worked wonders for me, because as soon as I came up for breath, I realized I had devoured the whole thing in less than two hours. And it left me speechless.

After Paul and Elizabeth's mother dies, they are left to fend for themselves, with the help of a nurse and Gerard (plus Gerard's father). Elizabeth takes up a job as a model, and meets Agathe, who moves in with them and becomes part of their family. As their family grows, and the siblings grow up, it becomes harder to stay in the private world (and the Game) that they shared for so long. But attempting to keep each other in The Game comes with a huge price, one that will leave you breathless with shock and sadness in the end.

Jealousy, intimacy, superiority, love, obsession with a subtle, yet consistent, hint of incest - this story has everything. It will confuse you, yet astound you. So just sit there and enjoy the ride.

Almost as magical as the film.

'Les Enfants Terribles' is one of those great novels of childhood at which the French excel, full of vibrancy, caprice, terror, passion, danger, wonder, fun: its narrative is an allegory of that life-, body-, soul-changing move from childhood to adulthood.
But it is so much more. It is the great Surrealist novel, about the child-like way of looking at the dim, everyday world as marvellous, as new: a snow-blanketed street, a messy room, a trip to the seaside. It is a novel of rite, of theatre, of play; of the classical and the modern; a living Surrealist manifesto, where reality, dream and imagination conflate in a supreme act of transformation, as dependent on, yet transcending, the real world as the novel's heroes. It is poetry and imagination as King Midas; a moustache on a marble bust; the lightest and most profound book ever written.

The book is arranged in two parts. Part one presents planetary data, such as atmospheric pressure, composition, and future conjunctions and transits. Part two contains a summary on each planet, including its moons. These summaries cover cloud and atmospheric conditions, surface features, historical early ideas about each planet, and recent discoveries from the Hubble Space Telescope and other data collected in the "late 1990s." The planetary information is supplemented by historical photographs, illustrations, and portraits. Appendixes provide very brief biographies of selected astronomers and a glossary.

The handbook is well suited for amateur astronomers and students of astronomy. Readers with less technical background may need to refer to a scientific dictionary, and professional astronomers may find the coverage too popular. This title makes a nice companion to Encyclopedia of the Solar System [RBB Mr 15 99]. Excellent Resource Guide

I found this book while researching in the library one day for astronimical events. I opened it and became intrigued immediately. The information contained within it kept me fascinated for hours and still does. I refer to it anytime I wish to know anything about the planets, eclipses, statistics concerning the planets etc. Each planet is addressed separately giving a history of the founder, how it was located. The beginning of each section pertaining to a planet includes items such as:

Physical Data: Size, Mass, Escape Velocity, Temperature Range, Oblateness, Surface Gravity, Volume, Magnetic Field Strength and orientation, Albedo, Density, Solar Irradiance, Atmosphere Pressure, Composition of Atmosphere, Maximum Wind Speeds, Cloud Features, Surface Features, Orbital Data, Observational Data, Early Ideas (a good history of how people interpreted information in earlier periods of time when technology was not as advanced as now), Important Concepts, Transits, Interesting Facts, Observing Data which includes Conjunction dates, elongation dates, Close conjunctions, Eclipses if applicable, Historical timelines.

The above information is provided for each planet, which makes this invaluable source book. About the Author
Khristi L. Adams a writer, director and producer and currently resides in Southern California. She recently completed her first short-film documentary called "Chivalry is Dead" where she won Best Directorial Debut of a Documentary at the NY International Film Festival. “Chivalry” was also recognized as Honorable Mention at the Los Angeles Movie Awards and selected for screening at the Charlotte Black Film Festival & The People’s Film Festival. She is currently in production for her next short film "Narrow Road." Khristi is writer and director of the stage plays, “Once Upon a Dream” & “The Herstory Exhibitions” which premiered at Crossroads Theater in New Brunswick, NJ. She also created, “Yesterday I Died,” a play and community initiative that addresses the effects of youth violence on young people working with high school students in Somerset, NJ and Brooklyn, NY. In October 2010, she was featured in "Almighty Debt: A Black in America Special" on CNN highlighting work she’s done with young people in the community. She also works as Associate Campus Pastor at Azusa Pacific University. Prior to working there, she served as Youth Pastor at First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens in Somerset, NJ. She is a graduate of Temple University with a degree in Advertising and a graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary where she obtained a Master of Divinity degree. She has done cross-cultural work in Ghana, West Africa; Kingston, Jamaica & Mexico working with churches, schools and community groups.

AWESOME Book!

This book should be required reading for anyone in leadership at a church that has at least one single over the age of 30. There are so many myths out there that are constantly preached at Christian singles and this book addresses them head on. Once someone in leadership becomes aware of these myths and the inherent fallacies of them, they can then make sure that they are not spreading them further.

Having successful marriages is a really big deal in the Christian church. However if the Church was serious about having healthy marriages, they would make sure that singles are dating and marrying for the right reasons. After all, if someone is desperate to hurry up and get married (see the chapter "The Myth of the Deadline") they are not likely to make a wise choice of partner. The Church also needs to accept singles who choose to not get married. They are not being selfish. They are simply choosing to live as a single person and there is nothing wrong with that. After all, both Jesus and Paul were single!

Khristi Adams is profoundly intelligent in her book about singleness. I read this right after a breakup, and it helped me, not only to accept where I am, but to embrace my singleness.
Her voice as a writer helps her to be relatable as she voices her opinion about the benefits of singleness. It's given me so much security in where I am.

The Baby Project was an Awesome book! I felt very bad for what happened to Whitney but I'm glad that she moved on and has Darius and Gino, who seems absolutely adorable! This book seems to have the power to give you emotions just like the character's, and has very good writing. I loved this book and intend to read the other 2 in the series, I think Susan Meier is a great author and can't wait to read more of her books!

Susan's Meier's books are a joy. Her writing is exemplary, she takes a reader on a emotional roller-coaster of a journey. I bought three of her books, not having read her before, I will definitely be buying more. She doesn't disappoint.

About the Author
R. F. Chapman (1930-2003) was an eminent insect physiologist and Professor in the Division of Neurobiology at the University of Arizona. His first four editions of The Insects have formed the standard text in the field for more than forty years.

Stephen J. Simpson is ARC Laureate Fellow in the School of Biological Sciences and Academic Director of the Perkins Centre for the study of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease at the University of Sydney. His core research aims are to understand swarming in locusts and to devise a new framework for studying nutrition. In 2012 he was awarded the Wigglesworth Medal from the Royal Entomological Society of London.

Angela E. Douglas is Daljit S. and Elaine Sarkaria Professor of Insect Physiology and Toxicology at Cornell University, New York. Her research and teaching is motivated by the mechanisms underlying insect function and her core research interests are the overlapping topics of insect nutrition and interactions between insects and beneficial microorganisms. She is a Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society and the Entomological Society of America.

Illinois Physiology Class Recommends Chapman's Text

The following comments were written by graduate and undergraduate members of an advanced class in insect physiology taught Spring Semester 2000.
Chapman's book is interesting and covers a variety of topics. It is interesting for learning about how much insects differ between orders. Chapman gives many examples of different phenomena in insects. As a student, though, all the examples and different phenomena make studying from the book difficult and overwhelming. It is useful as a reference, a book to read to clarify topics discussed in lecture. But it is very specific with the examples.
Chapman's textbook is comprehensive. It covers all aspects of insect physiology. It has full and updated literature citations for each chapter, which is very helpful for further reading. The language is simple and precise. But it is a little bit conservative and has slight coverage of some hot topics. The coverage favors insect structure and morphology.
For me as a student the Chapman text was very helpful, because it is clearly structured and it covers nearly all important fields of insect physiology and structure. The new edition is very up-to-date and gives good examples from recent investigations. It is a bit too focused on research conducted in the US, but this probably reflects the fact that most of the important research is conducted there. The illustrations are very clear and helpful.
I used this textbook in an advanced insect physiology class. To be perfectly honest, this book was a minor part of the class for me. I skimmed through it, used it for references, and as a sort of entomology handbook. From my perspective, it was a very complete source of information. At times it was a bit heavy on detail, but the information I needed was all there and clearly stated.
This book is not one that is useful to read from front to back. It is an excellent reference book that should be owned by all entomologists. Three or more specific examples are given for each topic instead of a generic example for all insects. This is useful because it gives you the range of known physiology of insects that can be compared to the reader's "insect of choice."
Chapman gives all the details an entomologist needs to know about insects. It may be a bit confusing due to the vast number of insects, but it is a good resource to own and keep. Chapman is very thorough.
One of the strengths of Chapman's new edition of Insects, Structure and Function is the wealth of examples. Every section of the book has examples from just about all of the orders of insects, although grasshoppers seem to rule disproportionately. A weakness with all of these wonderful examples is the cumbersome way Chapman places a list of them at the beginning of a section. He intends them to be as authoritative fleet of representatives who give some scale and scope to the subject being presented. There are places in the book where subjects that are usually treated together or that work as a whole system are poorly integrated. Digestion and nutrition are so separately treated (they are in different chapters) that the reader finds herself having to cross reference from section to section to make cogent sense of what nutrients have to do with digestion. Strangely, when Chapman presents the great variety of insect form and function one has a sense of cacophony. Instead of giving us a unity, or even the illusion of unity, of how form and function interact we are presented with vignettes of research. But these vignettes do not provide us with the pretty and easy to get to views that we find on the Internet. We find ourselves lost somewhere in a tome that is more intent on directing our attention to variation than to presenting us with direct descriptions. But then again, how do you argue with the only author in English who has been brave enough to try to make a synthetic analysis of the most diverse group of animals on earth?

Good text for advanced students

Chapman's book is a comprehensive and well-written entomology text. Not only does he cover all the basic topics in entomology, he does so in depth. This text may be too detailed and overwhelming for begining entomology students but is great for more advanced students. The one problem I have with this book is that Chapman often uses jargon without defining or explaining it, leaving the reader to look it up or remain confused.

Good material, poor binding

The book is well written and proposes a litany of examples showing different physiological processes in different orders of insects.

However, after less that a few months, and quite frankly minimal use due to the overly complex vernacular, the glue binding has broken in half, leading to a few pages being pulled out. For a book supposed to last me my entire graduate career, 3 months and pages are falling out is unacceptable.

About the Author
St�phane Mallat is a Professor in the Computer Science Department of the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University,and a Professor in the Applied Mathematics Department at ccole Polytechnique, Paris, France. He has been a visiting professor in the ElectricalEngineering Department at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and in the Applied Mathematics Department at the University of Tel Aviv. Dr. Mallat received the 1990 IEEE Signal Processing Society's paper award, the 1993 Alfred Sloan fellowship in Mathematics, the 1997Outstanding Achievement Award from the SPIE Optical Engineering Society, and the 1997 Blaise Pascal Prize in applied mathematics, from theFrench Academy of Sciences.

Pretty encyclopedic these days

Mallat's 800 page tome here is a very encyclopedic coverage of contemporary wavelet techniques and tricks. It takes the form of a "traditional" textbook: While there are some very brief refreshers on linear algebra, calculus, and statistics in an appendix, make no mistake -- there's a lot of advanced mathematics in the book, beyond what many (probably even the majority) of engineers learn during their undergraduate years. Additionally, while there are plenty of good "homework" problems at the end of each chapter, no solutions are provided. This all has several implications:

-- This isn't really the book you want for self-study if you aren't already familiar with wavelets. I'd suggest something like "A Primer on Wavelets and Their Scientific Applications" by Walker for that.
-- It can be a fine book for a college class on wavelets. I suspect the best approach would be for an instructor to use his own notes, assign reading for reinforcement, and problems from the end of each chapter. The deal here is that, in many cases, making good use of the results doesn't always require a full understanding of the mathematical underpinnings of the subject, and an instructor can guide students around what matters if they just want to apply the results (most students) vs. obtaining a deeper understanding that could be used to conduct new research or whatever (the very occasional student).
-- It is, of course, a fine reference for anyone already working in the field and familiar with the subject. Mallat is a pretty brilliant guy.

Note that Google Books has a copy of the earlier 2nd edition on-line; this might be handy for some people.

Totally unorganized, and imossible to comprehend

This book may be okay as a reference book for someone who already has a PhD in Mathematics and is very familiar with function spaces and decompositions.

The author has truly advance the state of the art with his groundbreaking papers in wavelets/filter banks, but he has no business writing a book.

I have been trying to use this as a text book for my image processing with wavelets class and it has given my an enormous amounts of pain an agony. I can not find a single topic that I can read and understand from his book, so I had to look at other references.

In chapter 5 he keeps referring to the fact that you have to read chapter 7 first --- why not reverse the order then?

In chapter 1, he would suddenly start referring to advanced concepts which he has not yet talked about.

Not to mention the large number of typos.

Overwhelming in quality and quanity!

I picked this book up after talking with some of the DSP guys at my office on what was the best book to get started in field with. Almost all of them had some version of this text on their desk or knew where to get their hands on one. All of them spoke very highly of it and I was excited to find a new edition copy.

Having looked through the book and read the sections relating to stuff I do or have done I have a few observations:

This is an awesome reference book if you remember something from class a few years ago and need a refresher.

Each chapter has a list of questions at the end, sadly I can't find a list of answers in the book or available online.

This is not a book for a beginner. If you don't have a background in the subject or a good source to ask questions of I don't think you'll be able to get much out of it.

I would have benefited from some real time examples either on a CD/website for some of the concepts to bridge the gap between text and application. The book has numerous figures showing various levels of processing that would make a great java applet example. If I was taking a college class I'm sure this would be more accessible, trying to study on my own at home and work it's hard to come by examples that illustrate the cases from the text.

All in all it's an amazing text and reference, just not for the newbie.

Book is very good starting point for ASIC backend engineers - with good and short introduction and than right on to the target.
However there is no substitute for practice so after reading the book , my advice is to jump start to some simple to medium complex projects.

This is a good intro - like the title says these are the essentials. This is a great overview of methodology, but the real secrets to success in physical design are knowing how to write and debug scripts, especially perl, unix, c-shell.
