Good show.

The author of this book is clearly literate and well-read, and puts together a really interesting chronology and analysis of the effects of the breakup of the European empires. At the beginning I wasn't very encouraged, as I found the first chapter to be a little too abstract and opining, but thereafter the author quickly gets into some fascinating matters of real substance. We learn where the term 'third world' was first used; how when the inhabitants of French Guinea opted for full independence the French decolonised so emphatically they took the phones off the walls when they left; how Bokassa's coronation ceremony is alleged to have cost a quarter of his country's wealth, and so on.
Don't let the brevity put you off: this is a well-written, well-rounded portrait of decolonisation by a guy with informed opinions on these matters. A great read.

De-possessioning foreign colonialists and the making of domestic colonialists?

I highly recommend this thought-provoking little book - "Decolonization." Many have written brilliant accounts of decolonization, however most such writings are either aimed at specialized readers or they are just too long for layreaders. This one is a rare exception. In barely a hundred pages Raymond Betts describes the forces that undermined colonialism, what decolonization meant for the urban as opposed to the rural populations, and the problems that accompanied, or perhaps even created by, the independences of many former colonies. Scholars of an activitist orientation such as Walter Rodney would blame it all on colonists. However, after these many years is the blame still valid? Some would say "yes" and point to ethnolinguistic fractionalization and the fact that in most cases decolonization left colonial boundaries unchanged. Others are not so sure because by abolishing colonial laws that prevented internal migration from rural to urban areas, independence has essentially created urban squality observed in many former colonies today. Betts concludes that rather than being monolithic, "decolonization is most easily appreciated and measured as a series of political acts, occasionally peaceful, often confrontational, and frequentlly militant, by which territories and countries dominated by Europeans gained their independence" (p .98. The success of the "colonies, like fruit, would fall from the tree when ripe" - here Betts is paraphrazing the French Philosopher Turgot. Intellectually stimulating, for sure.

The�Fifty Shades of Grey tide got my interest and I bought the entire trilogy. I can understand what captured the imagination of the many buyers, but, in my opinion, the story was overwritten and, as we now know, a derivative from the�Twilight�(Stephanie Meyer) saga. I'm happy for E. L. James, the phenomenal sales and, what's more important, the dialog it created. I know the titillation value attracted many buyers, but the story is not really that complex, almost didactic in scope.

Last night, I finished reading�Edge Play X�by M. Jarrett Wilson. Take�Fifty Shades�and ratchet it up a few notches, add better vocabulary, more complex characters and a story requiring�you to think, and you'll get closer to�Edge Play X.

Edge Play X�also uses BDSM as a device, but here it's much more part of the story. The central character, X, a Dominatrix, is also an artist, but 'allows' herself to be hired out by those wishing to role play a submissive. We meet her as she's being kidnapped by a CIA agent, who asks her to set up a multi-billionaire for possible blackmail.

While it seems the main theme breathes as class wars: authority figures, the extreme rich and recognition, there are other forces working behind the scenes which wrap the above within its confine.
Edge Play X�is a much more cogent book than what you may expect and it takes the reader on an intelligent journey, one requiring the reader to think and not be passive.

An erotic thriller!

Edge Play X is an exciting, edge of your seat, erotic thriller like nothing I've ever read before. This book will seriously mess with your mind! Edge Play X was recommended to me by a friend because I liked Fifty Shades of Grey...but trust me, Fifty Shades has nothing on this book. This book is a far more intriguing read. The story is waaaaay better and the characters are far more interesting. The main character "X" is a dominatrix blackmailed by the CIA to dom a rich and powerful man so that he can be set up to be blackmailed. It's got some BDSM for the sake of BDSM but it also has it for a reason. If you liked Fifty Shades, you'll love this. If you didn't like Fifty Shades...you'll love this. It's truly a very clever read with some blindsiding twists.

Scary sexuality

A few years ago I couldn't understand how such two styles as erotic reading and thriller can be joined in a one book. Than I read Alone With You: An Erotic Thriller Special. I was impressed, understanding that both so emotional genres can be joined in one book and this gives an exiting reading, as a result. Now I've received one more confirmation of significant impression - "Edge Play X" is a great example of almost-obsessing reading.

The story is deeper, than I expected. It can't be named as "light" or "easy" reading. M. Jarrett Wilson describes strong and complicated characters. A dominatrix named X had quite an easy target, which turned out in a hard choice. Dominating Terry Compton is scary, even extremely dangerous. Especially, concerning the fact, that CIA believes he murdered a previous woman. The problem will grow up quickly after X's significant travel to Paris and what's happened there. Now she doesn't know what she believes in and whom she can trust.

We have a chance to take a look at X's thoughts. She feels lost and confused between three men -- Compton, Simeon, and Michael. When you begin to understand her actions and her concerns, you'll see that this book is not simply enjoyable reading, it combines intellectual, erotic and thriller parts. I would recommend reading this. You'll be surprised, definitely.

An Intriguingly-Complex Work

Seeing a dominatrix as the subject of a CIA scandal was a surprise in and of itself. At first, I thought it was simply another excellent idea with poor execution. But it was quite the opposite. The characters are all incredibly complex and multidimensional, and the entire work is shrouded in mystery. Wilson's dynamic narration and construction--and of course the erotic nature--made this a real winner of a piece!
