The best book I have ever read about the role the U.S. Navy SEALS played in the Vietnam War.

Over the years I read numerous U.S. NAVY SEAL books both non-fiction and fiction. This fantastic book (Men in Green Faces: A novel of U.S. Navy SEALS BY Gene Wentz and B. Abell Jurus) is the first fiction novel I have read on the SEAL combat operations in Vietnam.

This is not a novel for the meek. The brutality of the Vietnam War is told with hard and realistic scenes in this book. The role the U.S. Navy SEALS played in that war is exposed in this book even though it is a novel. It was written by someone who has “been there and done that” and pulls no punches in this realistic depiction of the operations the SEALS were involved in Vietnam.

The personalities of each of the characters was well developed and the inner thoughts of these amazing warriors came out in this book, showing the tremendous pressure these SEALs were under completing so many missions on the dangerous waterways in Vietnam.

This short review cannot do this book justice. It is sad at times, but these brave and unique warriors loyalty to each other and the U.S. Navy SEAL traditions is fully told in this action packed wonderful novel.

If you are interested the true American Navy SEAL’s role and operations in the Vietnam War this book is a must read.

He was like a cooler operator and better looking than James Bond

He was my instructor & proctor in class 97. He was like a cooler operator and better looking than James Bond. He was like Captain America, Sgt. Rock, Sgt. Fury and James Bond all rolled into one! He was a true war hero! Navy Karate Champion (as I recall almost 40 years later) was on the U.S. Navy Olympic Bobsled team.
He did the nicest thing for us after a particularly hard day and night before in the mudflats from the Tijuana River. First though we paddled our IBS from Coronado, then because The Tijuana Sloughs was breaking about a mile out to sea, the waves had to be 15-20 ft. we paddled around and outside of the break and then dropped in! Lordy!
Anyway a few days later we're still there, in the cold mud it was January with unseasonably cold weather.
So before the Sunset he marched us upriver to where the clean water was coming in from the high tide. We had to take off our greens, clean and use them to clean the boats, too (IBS), then our instructors and GMG2 Gene Wentz checked us for leeches, we cleaned our greens, wrung them out got dressed. The whole time I kept my eye on the incredible waves breaking almost a mile out to sea as the Sunset! Google it: Tijuana Sloughs big waves, aerial view!
So we're standing there after getting dressed in our wet but wrung out greens all facing the spectacular sunset, and Instructor Wentz whipped out his pack of Marlboro 100's and passed them around to all who wanted one or needed one and we smoked those cigarettes and watched the Sunset!
It just seemed incredibly kind to me then and still.

This is a book that will keep you at the edge of your seat. Well written, by a man who has " been there-done that". Thank you and God bless you to all who have worn the Navy Seal Trident, and to their families.

Arguing that an understanding of the traditional view is essential to an understanding of private law and political life, this book highlights how the modern conception is seriously distorting in this regard.

A story unfolds throughout the chapters: the story of the growth and decline of the traditional view in political and legal thought. It challenges the modern fixation with the state, arguing for a return to the traditional view of legal and political community.

Allan Beever is a Professor of Law at the University of South Australia. He has previously taught or held visiting positions at the Universities of Ottawa, Southampton, Durham, the Max-Planck-Institut fur auslandisches und internationales Privatrecht, Hamburg, and the University of Auckland. His research focuses on the theory of tort law and the law of obligations more widely, on political and legal theory, and on the history of philosophy.

Azar is great!

The best grammar series around! I like all the books in the series and have used them in my different levels of ESL classes in several international schools. Good for middle and high school students, as well as adults. Some can be used with younger children as well, although the content is sometimes for older students. Excellent workbooks, too!

About the Author
Susan Welch received her AB and PhD degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is currently Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Professor of Political Science at The Pennsylvania State University. Her teaching and research areas include legislatures, urban politics, and women and minorities in politics. She publishes widely on issues of race, gender, and urban politics.

John Gruhl, Professor of Political Science, received his AB from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, and his PhD from the University of California at Santa Barbara. Since joining the University of Nebraska faculty in 1976, he has taught and done research in the areas of judicial process, criminal justice, and civil rights and liberties. He holds campus- and university-wide distinguished teaching awards for excellence in undergraduate teaching and became a charter member of the university's Academy of Distinguished Teachers.

Susan M. Rigdon received AB and PhD degrees in political science from the University of Illinois in 1966 and 1971, respectively. While focusing her teaching on comparative politics and international relations, she has also taught American government courses at several universities in the United States and China. Her research interests include culture and politics, security policy, and poverty and development. She is a Research Associate in Anthropology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Sue Thomas is Senior Research Scientist at the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation (PIRE) and Director of PIRE-Santa Cruz. Prior to joining PIRE, she served as Associate Professor of Government and Director of Women's Studies at Georgetown University. She received her A.B. and M.Ed. from UCLA, and her Ph.D. from University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Her research specialty is women and politics, and among her publications are How Women Legislate and Women and Elective Office: Past, Present, and Future.

Not very good.

This book gets the job done, but I can't help but be annoyed by it from time to time. Out of the 6 classes that I'm taking this semester, it's the thickest textbook that I've got, but it seems to cover the least amount of information. It's easy to tell that the author is both liberal and female. I'm actually more liberal than conservative, and I like women, but I don't think that a good government book should have an obvious bias.

The author over-uses SAT words to try to sound more credible. My vocabulary is decent enough, but I still get irritated, because it's poor writing skill to use uncommon words when trying to communicate with a common audience. By "common" I don't mean "stupid." I simply mean that every student is required to take a U.S. Government class, so the book should be written in a manner that attempts to communicate with the average student. Aside from that, when you use the word "egregious" in every other sentence, it makes you sound like a space alien. Nobody wants to learn about their government from a space alien.

Also, I feel that the book over-uses miscellaneous text boxes. It's not uncommon for books to sometimes have a little box of text off to the side or at the top or bottom of a page that contains some behind-the-scenes information or a little story that somehow pertains to the main text. However, this book utilizes those text boxes way too often and they're often pretty hefty in size. Every other page, you have to try to find a good point to break off from the current train of thought to read a text box that contains a completely different--and often unrelated--train of thought.

Some of these points may sound picky, but when a book costs almost $200, I feel that it should be well-written, designed and edited. On a positive note, I do feel that the author is probably very knowledgeable about our government. I just don't like how wordy/biased/text-boxy this book is. My professor's quizzes are only five questions per chapter, yet some chapters are over 40 pages--too much filler.

Understanding American Government is an instant cult classic! It's a riveting fictitious story of a utopian society where three branches of government including a judicial, executive, and legislative rule in an equal and balanced manner according to a Constitution. It is definitely a page turner and a must read for adrenalin junkies. Imagine a world where a legislative branch of government creates laws based on the needs of their constituents and a judicial branch of government checks the legislation to ensure it meets the standards set forth by original framers of a Constitution. If that isn't exciting enough, there is a third branch of government called the Administrative branch that actually manages government and enforces the laws that govern this fictitious society. The added twist.... there are rules that allow each branch of government to check each others work. Crazy right? Don't pick this book up unless you are prepared to read it cover to cover. The authors of this book are geniuses and dreamers that should be applauded.

Propoganda for the Left

A college kid in my house has this one. It covers american government, but EVERYTHING has a left spin on it.
t's a nice propoganda piece. There are periodic sections on "American Diversity" that discuss the faults of
europeans, whites, and males. There are sections talking about how "obviously" if you didn't vote for president obama you're a closet racist.

There's a section on Democrat and Republican corruption, but all of the examples talk about republican corruption in government and how Republicans on balance are more inclined to subvert the government.

They also never connect the dots whenever it's contrary to leftish philosophy. They talk about "negative attitudes" towards african americans and how it's unfair and racist, and then go on to say later that some whites resent affirmative action but they should just get over it, Blacks need the help... and then can't figure out why someone might then doubt that an african-american got his position on merit.

It's nearly endless, EVERYTHING has a leftish spin. Don't bother buying this book, don't use it in your classroom. Find something that is neutral in it's evaluation and not a Democrat hit piece or an effort to indocrinate the next generation.

Here's one straight out of the book: "Some opoents of the heatlh care reform passed in 2010 claim that the federal law is unconstitutional.... These opponents are called "Tenthers," because their argument is based on the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution.... The Tenthers cling to the original Constitution, while most Americans today accept our current Constitution."

SERIOUSLY? (1) I've never heard the term "tenthers", but nice job demeaning anyone who opposes socialized medicine or the individual mandate. (2) It was opposed based upon the COMMERCE CLAUSE not authorizing it. An argument that they won, by the way. (3) Last time I checked, we all have the same constituion. But you've written your article about how "most Americans accept..." versus those old reactionary, morons, those Tenthers who are some sort of fringe element. You get the idea.

The book is ludicrous, and makes no effort at balance. None.

The Perfect Match: Even if you have planned the perfect crime, there is always going to be that one little detail that will trip you up every time. Count on it.

Cell Block: Tom drew a 15 year sentence for armed robbery and aggravated assault, but he could be out in as little as 8 more months if his record of good behavior continues. So far he has been considered to be a model prisoner. But there is a new face in the cellblock - an old, familiar face from work. Tom makes it clear that he has a grudge against Johnny, and Johnny wonders how he can serve his 4 months without running into Tom in this overcrowded facility.

Cocaine: Sure, Clyde may have only been cruising down the highway at sixty-eight miles an hour in an old Volare, but pretty soon he would be on top of the world. -- Funny how one lousy flat tire can change everything.

Dog Day Morning: Roy was an incurable romantic and a diehard movie buff. Unfortunately for him, he found out that sometimes the two just do not go together.

Is It Safe?: Ever heard the expression, "He's not the brightest bulb in the box"? Well, apparently the Kotter brothers were a couple of the dullest - if in fact there was any light to be found between the pair of them. That aside, the safe seemed to be safe - at least when the brothers came calling.

Loan Shark (also found in the collection Cheater's Dozen): Pretty standard set of rules Pendleton (the loan shark) had: Walter would make every payment on time or Bart (the muscle) would break both his legs. But this story came with a little twist.

New on the Job: You know the job. You have the tools of the trade. But that does not mean you don't have a lot to learn. Even if you are an assassin.

Stella and the Chief: Stella and the Chief had a good thing going. Why couldn't his wife, Nancy, just accept that and bow out gracefully?

The Fish Tie Strangler: Jerry's bar was where they met and where they'd forged a tradition for the past 18 months: every Friday night they had a nightcap there. But on that Friday night it was after 2am when they drove by Jerry's - now closed for remodeling after the fire. Only a few blocks later the car dies, and it is starting to rain. Why not continue the tradition and have that Friday night nightcap at the bar a short walk away? We can call the mechanic to come get the car from inside the bar. And don't worry about the Fish Tie Strangler. Those things happen in dark alleys when you're alone. You'll be inside, and I'll be with you.

Trick or Treat: Trick or Treat. Like most children, Arthur Merrick had always liked the "treat" part of that phrase. Until the year he didn't.
