Covey author of "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" Unlike my book on the 7 Habits, this book by my son Sean speaks directly to teens in an entertaining and visually appealing style (and Sean, I never thought you listened to a word I said). As prejudiced as this may sound, this is a remarkable book, a must-read!

About the Author
Sean Covey works for FranklinCovey as Executive Vice President of Innovation and Products. He graduated with honors from BYU with a degree in English and later earned his M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. As the starting quarterback for BYU, he led his team to two bowl games and was twice selected ESPN Most Valuable Player. On the side, he likes to write books and is the author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, The 6 Most Important Decisions You'll Ever Make, and The 7 Habits of Happy Kids. He lives in the Rocky Mountains in Utah with his wife Rebecca and their children. Sean's favorite pastimes include going to movies, working out, eating, and writing.

Should be required reading for all teens, SO GOOD.

My 15 year old daughter asked for this book for her birthday after studying it in one of her classes at school. I love giving a book at birthday and holiday and this one was worth every penny. She loves this book and reads it often. This is a must give book to your child of they have a personality that loves organization, leadership, social situations, business, and communication. She often references something she has read in the book with is. I very pleased.

I'm doing this as a class with my two early teen children. I wish I would have had someone to teach me these principles when I was their age. It has sparked great discussions in our home about being proactive (instead of reactive), living your principles, and having a balanced life. I purchased the workbooks for their private use as well. I think his writing is good for their ages and he uses a lot of stories to illustrate things and keeps their interest.

Dr. Werner W.K. Hoeger Professor Emeritus in the Department of Kinesiology at Boise State University, and Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and the Research Consortium of SHAPE America (Society of Health and Physical Educators). The 2004 recipient of the Presidential Award for Research and Scholarship in the College of Education at Boise State University, keynote speaker at the VII Iberoamerican Congress of Sports Medicine and Applied Sciences and the 2010 Western Society for Kinesiology and Wellness, Dr. Hoeger continues to research and lecture on exercise physiology, physical fitness, and wellness. In addition to PRINCIPLES AND LABS FOR PHYSICAL FITNESS, Dr. Hoeger has published several Cengage Learning texts including Fitness and Wellness, Principles and Labs for Physical Fitness, Lifetime Physical Fitness and Wellness, Wellness: Guidelines for a Healthy Lifestyle, and Water Aerobics for Fitness and Wellness. Dr. Hoeger is a former luge athlete (2002 and 2006 Winter Olympian); All-American by USA Track & Field in 2012, 2014, 2015, and 2016; and renowned fitness and wellness innovator. The Handbook of Structural Engineering is a comprehensive reference source on the fundamentals of, and special topics in, structural engineering. The book is intended for practicing engineers, and the introduction notes that the ideal reader will be an "M.S.-level engineer." Consequently, treatment of subjects is highly technical and emphasizes mathematical explanations to an extent that it might be of limited use to novices.
The first section provides a detailed overview of the fundamentals of structural engineering. Following this introductory section are eight chapters covering special types of structures, and thirteen chapters on special topics in structural engineering. All chapters contain a brief glossary of key concepts discussed within the chapter, an extensive bibliography, suggested readings, and a list of relevant codes and standards where applicable.

Very Comprehensive, and Especially Valuable for Semi-Rigid Jointed Structures

This single volume includes chapters on topics as diverse as timber engineering, tunnel construction, fire engineering, bridges of all types, glass structures, fiber-reinforced polymer composites, and much more.

One exceptionally-helpful chapter in this book, in my opinion, is Chapter 23, on semirigid frame structures. Author Xu explains the concept of semirigid joints, summarizes the state-of-the-art knowledge in the field, and provides worked examples of problems involving semirigid-fixed beams and braced frames. The worked examples are especially helpful in that they each show the solution in a very step-by-step manner.

A very interesting book with a completely unique point of view. If you are used to traditional “story” or “narrative” books, this is not for you. If you are interested in the unfortunate 2008 K2 climbing season, you should definitely read a few other books before this one. The author takes a very unique approach and fills in a lot of gaps that other books left. I am anxiously awaiting “Part 2” to really grasp how the author feels about certain incidents that happened during the disaster that took place that clear August night.

Very bad choice for a course

This text is for a course where the students might not have any experience or particular interest in programming. The first chapter is actually devoted to explaining what a computer is and what a CS major studies.

As it is now in its 7th edition, I guess it is in fairly wide use. I can only assume that this is because most instructors have never read through it themselves, because it is truly awful. Yes, the table of contents looks promising and the pages are pretty, but concepts are introduced slowly in very pedantic language that can be hard to parse. Simple concepts are sometimes explained in a way that is remarkably unintutive. Details of specific language features tend to be scattered, so it is hard to form a coherent idea of each. Important details may be mentioned just in passing, without adequate introduction, or in an unrelated context. Exercises are not preceded by illustrative examples.

Language coverage is limited to ANSI C (actually, a subset of it). The only place in the whole book where the existence of C99 is even aknowledged is on page 71, where they note that they will not be using C99/C++ style comments.

This book will make your students feel dumb and convince them that programming in C is harder than it really is.

Horrible book for begginers !!!

I got this book because it was the book choice of the classroom, unfortunately the class was online anddepeding on the book alone was a whole agony,this book was very very hard to understand especially for someone like me that had to previous programming experience. The bookgets harder when you go deeper into chapters I barely got a 5 out of 10 in chapters 6,7 and 8. By fortunewe only did 8 chapters because the class was online and perhaps the teacher knew the book was hard for usto understand. The. Book not only lacks good explanations but lacks information, you cant tell where the author got the answer from their no explanation on what exacklty is a placeholder, what it is used for and so on. Very hard to understand ... I hated every single moment of it and I am glad I finished it!!!

"Tahir al-Bayati (1937 - ) has a B.A. degree in English from Baghdad University and holds Cambridge Lower and Higher Certificates in English which he obtained during his studies in the United Kingdom. He has participated in several English courses, especially in one held at the University of Birmingham, U.K. He has taught English for 33 years, starting at the formerly Nizamiyya Secondary (High) School for Boys in Baghdad, once the most exclusive and prestigious school in all of Iraq (read inside pages). Many non-English speaking students have benefitted from this book, many still do and many, many more will be benefitting. This is not an ordinary book by any standard. It is the product of efforts that lasted for many years, and you can come to this conclusion when you review its contents. The author taught English and has had a firsthand experience in the problems faced by those whose mother tongue is quite different from English. He has kept improving his work time and over again, so much so that the number of its reviews has exceeded seventeen. A Definitive Look at Francesco Vanni

This is the catalogue accompanying the exhibition of the same name organized by the Art Gallery of Yale University and mounted there from September 2013 to January 2014. Francesco Vanni (1563-1610) was without doubt the most prominent and successful artist in Siena and its environs at the end of the sixteenth century. He made altarpieces and decorations for virtually every church in and around the city, and his renown and reputation was enough for him to be called by Pope Clement VIII to Rome to work on several churches and even to create an altarpiece for Saint Peter's. It is surprising, then, that this is apparently the first exhibition to be dedicated solely to his work, and it is an extensive one, bringing together objects from almost thirty lenders internationally. The catalogue is also the first monographic study of his oeuvre, and so we must be all the more thankful for its being an excellent one. The occasion for the show was the Gallery's acquisition, in 2003, of Vanni's canvas "The Rest on the Flight into Egypt" (ca. 1599; the cover image is a detail), generally known as the "Madonna della Pappa," a work widely held to have been among Vanni's most important paintings, but which was long thought to have been lost in the eighteenth century. (Unfortunately, we are not told any of what must be the fascinating story of its rediscovery and the University's acquisition of it.) It thus joined Yale's already impressive collection of early Italian paintings, at that time under the curatorship of John Marciari, who was well acquainted with these works from his graduate studies and 2000 dissertation on Girolamo Muziano. Until very recently the Curator of European Art and Head of Provenance Research at the San Diego Museum of Art, he was the chief organizer of the exhibition and major editor of its catalogue, and, along with some former Yale colleagues, has produced an excellent study of this unduly neglected artist.

The catalogue is introduced by two scholarly essays. In the first, Dr. Marciari traces Vanni's life and work, paying particular attention to the influence on him of other painters (especially Barocci and the Carracci), his role as an exemplar of the behests of the Counter-Reformation, and his connections to the Church hierarchy and his work in Rome. In the second essay, Suzanne Boorsch, Curator of Prints, Drawings and Photographs at Yale, and the volume's co-editor, discusses the proliferation of Vanni's designs through the wide dissemination of etchings, engravings and woodcut prints made after his images, largely with his collaboration. Both these essays are scrupulously informed and meticulous in their scholarly annotation and incorporate a good deal of new information and original research. The catalogue itself presents eighty-three numbered works, ranging from the two large oil paintings that are the only Vanni paintings owned in the Western Hemisphere to the many print works and preparatory studies for the paintings. Most of Vanni's paintings are in the Tuscan churches for which they were commissioned and do not travel, but reproductions of them are included in the many companion illustrations in the essays and catalogue. (The jacket text tells us that there are over 200 illustrations, and they are almost all in very good color. I do wish, though, that more of the original paintings had been reproduced in larger format, even though they were not themselves exhibited.) Each of the entries is extensively commented by one or more of the curators. The book concludes with a selected bibliography and a comprehensive index. Given that there has been so little literature available on Vanni, especially in English, this is a very welcome publication, and it has been very well done. Vanni was a remarkably gifted painter, in substance, style and coloration quite reminiscent of Barocci, and arguably not much less accomplished; it is high time that he has been given a comprehensive examination worthy of his stature. Obviously, this volume has immediate scholarly value, but it will appeal also to the general reader with an interest in late Renaissance, Mannerist or early Baroque art. Highly recommended.
