Enlightening view of Pompeii's history

I have visited the ruins of Pompeii and read a lot about it, but I learned some things I didn't know from this course. The professor takes you through the entire history, from the earlier settlements by the Greeks and Etruscans through the volcanic eruption that destroyed the city. This is history the way it should be presented -- fascinating without hyperbole. The course held my interest all the way through, with good visuals, including photos and graphic recreations of what the city would have looked like from its earliest days until its destruction.

A "must-have" for any fantasy buff's private collection

The latest in the popular "ology" series, Monsterology: The Complete Book of Monstrous Beasts is as beautiful and elaborate as its many companion volumes. Featuring writings on fantastic beasts from griffons and hippogriffs to phoenixes, the pegasus, unicorns, kraken, sphinx, and much more (but not dragons - they're covered in a different book!), Monsterology reads a bit like a nineteenth century naturalist treatise. Numerous delicate pop-up flaps, textured "hide samples" or other special tidbits adorn the pages - most notably the so-called "ashes from the nest of a phoenix". "Ashes from a phoenix's nest [like those above] are said to give long life. They should never be ingested, as this could prove disastrous. Instead, the ashes are so potent that simply keeping this book on a nearby shelf will have a noticeably beneficial effect in fifty years or so." The colorful artwork adds the perfect touch to this "must-have" for any fantasy buff's private collection.

Not accurate, but Who Cares!

As a student of cultural history, I place a certain small value on continuing the correctness of various mythology throughout time. I was a bit disappointed with some of the "information" in this book, as it doesn't always follow the accepted mytho-historical references. Barring that, this book is fabulous! It's obviously written for pure entertainment and gives more value to involving the young reader (and myself!) in becoming a true Monsterologist, rather than any cultural accuracy. I now believe myself and my 11-year-old son to have all the skills necessary to go out and begin our careers as Monsterologists, knowing now where to find the creatures, what details to look for, and how to record data. I'm seriously looking forward to our next safari. This book, and all of the 'Ologist books, are the greatest thing for the imagination since the cardboard box! I will be purchasing many more of these. Highly recommended!

Nice picture book, but disappointing "Ologies" book.

Dr. Ernest Drake, author of Dragonology, returns with a new book about many of the unusual creatures he encountered over the years during his pursuit of dragons. Whether the beasts live on the earth, in the sea, or soar through the air, Drake does his best to scientifically chronicle each one. After the featured creatures, appendices chronicle spells and charms associated with these animamls and the adventures of historic monsterologists.

Why they named the book "Monsterology" when the perfectly applicable word "Cryptozoology" already exists eludes me. I suppose it's because the book, which claims to be written in the late 19th or early 20th century, may predate the use of the word cryptozoology, but it seems more likely that the word may have been thought too difficult for younger readers.

I thought that this book was a rather weak follow-up to Dragonology. With so many different monsters and mythological characters to catalog, Drake doesn't have time or space to go into depth. For familiar creatures like dragons and unicorns, I didn't feel like I missed much, but many of Drake's choices might be pretty obscure for a young audience. How many kids are familiar with the baku, a creature of Japanese origin? Well, all they will get in this book is a small drawing and a couple of sentences, which doesn't cover much. Worse, in his entry on the nue Drake compares it to another creature called a tanuki - but nowhere in the book is this creature cataloged, so unless the child has encountered the name before it won't be helpful.

To give praise where it is truly due, the illustrations are beautiful. Each animal looks as real as if these sketches came straight from a 19th century biologist's field notes. I also loved that each animal entry includes a small map highlighting what countries or continents these creatures inhabit.

Compared to other Ologies titles, this book is quite light on interactive features. There are a few envelopes with letters inside, and a couple of booklets, but these are generally shorter and smaller than in other books. At the very back of the book, there's a "cabinet of curiosities" that contain several cryptid artifacts, and even a blank "shelf" for the child to add his or her own bit of ephemera. But there are no games or collectible cards as there were in Mythologyor Illusionology.

I have a feeling that if I'd encountered Monsterology without knowing that it's part of a series, I would have been much more impressed with it. But having seen what this publisher is capable of, I find that this book simply fell short of expectations.

About the Author

Ken Ramey holds a BS in Computer Science, and also a Masters in Computer Information Systems with an emphasis on Database Administration and Software Engineering. He began his 15+ year career while serving in the United States Air Force starting in 1997. During this time, Ramey wrote software for the Academic and Training wings of the US Air Force Academy. He had a chance to work on projects that included scheduling algorithms, grading systems, pilot currency tracking, and even an aircraft landing control system for the training airfield.�After being Honorably Discharged from the Air Force, Ken was recruited to work for Oracle Consulting where he worked on Government contracts involving Oracle Application Server and Oracle Internet Directory. This experience led him into working for Centroid where he is now the Portfolio Manager for Fusion Middleware Products and Identity Management. In this position he takes the lead and assists on projects involving FMW Products such as Content Management, SOA, and WebCenter. His work at Centroid also includes any implementations involving Identity Management with an emphasis on integrations with other Oracle Products such as EBS. He has been a regular presenter at IOUG Collaborate and has also presented at other regional conferences such as the Michigan Oracle Users Summit, and the Rocky Mountain Oracle Users Group's Training Days.

Exercise One: Your Personal Ten Commandments This exercise is designed to help you uncover some of your unspoken rules. It will take about fifteen to twenty minutes. Try to articulate some of the unspoken rules you grew up with. Take your time to think it over. These unspoken rules are generally so ingrained that we are rarely aware of them. Once both of you have articulated your "personal ten commandments," share them with each other. Are there rules you would like to change? Then write down how you would like to divide up the tasks, according to your understanding of your own and your wife’s interests, time, and abilities. Finally, compare your list with your wife’s list and discuss the results. Put your final decision of who will do what in the last column, and be prepared to renegotiate when your circumstances change. This exercise will take about thirty minutes.

Easy read w/ valid points//Excerts are from Workbook

First off, the excerpts (table of contents, page and backcover) above are from the workbook, not the book.
The book was a very easy and quick read. I have suggested it to a number of friends as I feel it brings up some valid points and can be used as a spring board to further discussion. Too many people marry without talking about what they are getting into and expecting. The book talks about the myths of marriage, the ebb and flow of relationships, expectations, and ends with a discussion on faith and religion in marriage. That is in the last chapter and can be skipped if you are not religeous and/or shy away from "Christian" stuff. The rest of the book only touches on faith as it relates to the authors description of an event.
The book was written in '95 and mentions much of the relationship self help stuff from that era. The authors are married, and they give examples from thier own marriage, as well as from other couples they have counseled. There are out-quotes, places to pause for discussion, and a few diagrams.
As someone else mentioned, the book does make you feel as if you have to get the workbooks to get a complete picture. You don't. I thought they were overpriced for what they are, although they too can help in discussion, especially if you aren't doing any other than what color flowers to get and what kind of limo you want. The excercises range from really simple ratings (on a scale of 1 to 5, how improtant is the following to you, do alone and compare and discuss) to more time consuming stuff (what unwritten rules do you have?). I found out in one excercie that my honey expects me to do 80% of the childrearing, while I expected we'd be closer to 60/40.
Part of it is intuitive stuff, part of it is stuff that you might think, "I hadn't thought of it that way". If you're reading about this book, congrats and Good luck!

Not worthless, but don't bother buying the workbooks.

This book was recommended to us by several friends and my mother, so we bought and read it. I would have been happier had I borrowed it from the library and not spent the money. It has some good common-sense suggestions to keep a relationship working, but nothing earth-shattering. The only things I found really helpful were the triangular model of relationships and the chapter on ebb and flow. Other than that, if you've taken Psychology 101 this book has nothing new for you. Also, I was very disappointed in the workbooks. The book makes you feel like you are missing out if you don't stop every few paragraphs to do an exercise in the workbook, but the workbook is exceptionally lame and consists mostly of empty lines and questions that are obvious to the reader anyway-- definitely not worth $14 extra. If you want a really fantastic marriage book, try "I Pledge You My Troth" by James Olthuis, if you can find it.

This workbook, along with the main book, are excellent counseling tools for couples engaged or considering marriage. It is also excellent for couples that are already married. It is professionally done, and includes many exercises that help couples communicate their expectations about marriage and eliminate some problems before they begin. It is well worth the money.

Within the geoscience community the estimation of natural resources is a challenging topic. The difficulties are threefold: Intitially, the design of appropriate models to take account of the complexity of the variables of interest and their interactions. This book discusses a wide range of spatial models, including random sets and functions, point processes and object populations. Secondly,the construction of algorithms which reproduce the variability inherent in the models. Finally, the conditioning of the simulations for the data, which can considerably reduce their variability. Besides the classical algorithm for gaussian random functions, specific algorithms based on markovian iterations are presented for conditioning a wide range of spatial models (boolean model, Voronoi tesselation, substitution random function etc.) This volume is the result of a series of courses given in the USA and Latin America to civil, mining and petroleum engineers, as well as to gradute students is statistics. It is the first book to discuss geostatistical simulation techniques in such a systematic way.
