About the Author

Alison Theaker has 30 years experience in public relations and taught public relations and integrated marketing communications in the UK and the USA . She is the author of bestselling textbooks The Public Relations Handbook (2012) and Effective Media Relations (2005). She is an elected Fellow of the CIPR and was its first Head of Education and Training. She has addressed conferences in the UK, USA and Australia about the future of the industry, developing teams and improving writing skills. She is now a PR coach for small businesses, running her own consultancy, The Spark, www.thesparkuk.com as well as being an accredited action learning facilitator.

Heather Yaxley is a hybrid public relations practitioner-academic, with over 25 years’ experience working in-house and a consultant. worthless book!

I was forced to purchase this book for my mechanical engineering class, powerplant design. It is one of the most useless books I have ever had to read. The book is out of date, does a terrible job with thermodynamics, and a minimal job explaining turbine geometry or dynamics. I used my thermodynamics, kinematics, and dynamics books from other classes more than I used this book. Then when I wanted to re-sell the book I purchased for $225, I got $25.

One of the better text books I've ever bought

I used this text for a 300 level Mechanical engineering class.
This book discusses power plant components in great detail, explaining their function and how to analyze their processes.
Heavy on Thermo, Fluids, and Heat Transfer.
Steam tables in the back are better than my thermo book.

I believe it used to be a good book -- in the 1970's when it originally was written. although printed in 2002 it hadn't been updated. Old b/w pictures of bad quality, no single reference to use of computers (like EES, Matlab) to use for powerplant design etc. All examples in the book are easy when you use EES or another software. The fact that makes them hard is that it is all in English units and when you calculate by hand (calculator). It really should get an update... this is the 21st century and this is one of the most expensive textbooks I ever bought. I also suspect many of the practical ideas are dated. There is some reference to "modern technology" (i.e. natural draft cooling towers) that "will be dominant in the 80's" :-) and I really believe all reference to newer technology, their risks and opportunities is based on the knowledge of the 1970's. With that completely obsolete.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a newer book of the 21st century that takes advantage of computers and other new technology.

Again, this sure was a good book - in the 1970's.

Winchester guns, ammunition, and company history to 1940.

Williamson's 1952 book is very informative particularly as relates to company history.. Williamson's account of companies purchased by winchester and reporting the train of company managers are an enrichment of knowledge for many readers.
The emphasis seems more about company than of gun details although pages and pages of guns are pictured. The book also lists a wealth of information about company ammunition.

Very good book for a person who is very interested in Winchester's history. The book details how the company was started, eatly products development of smokeless gunpower.
Lots of info on manufacturing, how they set up a dealer network, etc.
This is not the best book for the casual reader. The title is a little mis-leading. The informaion is mostly internally focused on the company and how it operated. Not customers and how Winchester firearms were used to win the west.

About the Author

Alfred Kadushin was the Julia C. Lathrop Distinguished Professor of Social Work Emeritus at the School of Social Work at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He was the author of Consultation in Social Work, The Social Work Interview, Adopting Older Children, and, with Judith A. Martin, Child Abuse: An Interactional Event, all published by Columbia University Press. Dr. Kadushin passed away in February of 2014. Daniel Harkness is a licensed clinical social worker and an associate professor in the School of Social Work at Boise State University.

Completely Outdated!

The information in the Supervision in Social Work text is extremely dated and I found it quite offensive.

- Male social work supervisors may be more 'feminine' than men in general, and female supervisors may be more 'masculine' than women in general.
- Males attracted to social work, a profession categorized as a female profession, are likely to be more androgynously oriented than males in general. A male supervisor, in becoming a social worker, has already added some elements of feminine orientation to his behavioral repertoire.
- Male supervisors may act in a traditionally courtly, protective manner toward female supervisees, being careful to avoid ‘hurting’ them by being critical, even when criticism is appropriate.
- For some men, working with a female supervisor is the first time in their adult life, except in their relationship with parents, that they are presented with a woman in a position of authority.
- Few whites have experienced a situation of subordination to an African American person.
- An African American staff member newly promoted to the position of supervisor face a number of possible problems. Some workers may perceive that promotion as a response to affirmative action mandates, not as a consequence of the new supervisor's professional competence. Administration may perceive the portion as having a 'showcase' component, establishing the administration's credentials as nonracist. Administration may also hope the promotion may have a 'fire-fighter' element, defusing any complaints about discrimination, or a 'lightning rod' function, absorbing flak from African American community.
- African American supervisees may resent African American supervisors, who may be perceived as identified with oppressive management and also as having betrayed their group by ‘acting white.
- African American staff members may see the new African American supervisor as having a special responsibility to advocate for the special concerns of African American staff and clients. Failure to take an active stance in this regard leaves the new supervisor open to accusation of being an Uncle Tom or an Oreo-black outside, white inside.

Good book, but be careful if you buy used

This is an excellent book if you are new to C++ or even if you have some prior programming experience. It covers numerous topics and a lot of the information can be generalized to other programming languages as well.

My one major complaint is that the author/publisher have only made the appendices and extra materials available for 6 months with a special online code, only one of which comes with the book. If you need a new code, you have to spend upwards of $20 for it. In case you purchase a used copy of this book, the code will likely already have been used. Isn't the point of buying a book so that you get all of the information in one place without having to pay ANOTHER $20 for a new code which only works for a limited time? Limited time literature, seriously? Stupid.

Kindle Version Is Not The Same As The Full Print Version

The textbook itself gets five starts. It does a great job of teaching a beginner programmer. Some of the chapters do seem to reiterate some topics more times than necessary, but perhaps that's the author choosing to err on the side of caution to make sure certain teaching points stick.

Taking online courses for my degree, I read this book pretty much from cover to cover. The book teaches to the beginner without being condescending. It is very well written with a lot of good examples, charts, figures, tables, etc. and tons of review questions throughout each chapter and yet more questions as well as "programming challenges" at the end of each chapter that give you a chance to apply what you've learned.

Having said that, Amazon only gets three stars on this book. If you buy the Kindle version, please note that it is NOT the same as the full print version provided by the link on the full print version's page. This Kindle "Brief Version" has some 200 fewer pages than the actual print version. Having seen the print version's table of contents, I noted that the chapters missing from the Kindle version include the following topics: Exceptions, Linked Lists, Stacks, Queues, Recursion, and Binary Trees. Therefore, if you're a computer science major, you probably want to go ahead and buy the full print version.

Had the Kindle version contained the last five chapters as I initially expected, it would get five stars. Now I know to verify Amazon's links by comparing the ISBN and page counts prior to buying a Kindle version. Live and learn...

You're in Good Hands

As a freshmen Computer Science major, I was slightly apprehensive about the text I would be using to truly learn my first programming language. Up until that point, my programming experience had been defined by some free Python tutorials which made even the simplest commands seem complex to me. C++ is a difficult language to learn. However, Gaddis really hits the mark with this text and two years later, I am still coming back to it again and again.

I have read numerous C++ texts now from C++ Primer, to Accelerated C++ and even Stroustrup's own books on the language he created. While those books are great, and offer perhaps more "intense" coverage of C++, Starting out with C++ will take you from having no experience of programming to a sound understanding of the intricacies of a complicated language. If you truly want to master C++, you will need to read those other books, but this one will get you up to the level necessary to really make use of them.

The book itself is quite large (over a thousand pages) but very readable. Its large size is due mainly to the massive number of programming examples found within it. Gaddis includes an entire, functioning program for all his programming examples (and there are hundreds of them). This allows you to see not only how to use a particular aspect of the language, but how it fits in with the other pieces of a program. On a side note, I am a huge fan of the extremely crisp, clean code that Gaddis uses. It's very readable, and has the tendency to spoil you as well. I found myself somewhat annoyed by the coding styles I found in other books since they are less readable than Gaddis's.

Gaddis does a tremendous job with this text, and if you read it carefully from page 1 onward, you'll never be left scratching your head. This makes it ideal for self study however on the other hand, if you are looking for a more reference oriented text, this probably isn't it. The explanations and introductions to the programming concepts found here are second to none. On a side note, I have used both the 6th and 7th editions and can tell no difference other than the color of the pages. Unless you just hate green as opposed to purple, the 6E used will work well for you. There is a disc that comes with the book but honestly, its not especially useful. My edition also came with the "MyProgramming" kit, which is total garbage by the way. Unless you are in college and your instructor requires you to use that, you won't need it. The source code you can download online but I personally never really used it.
