I bought this to research a family ship that was launched in this time period. If you are interested, really interested/ in the Clipper era, you are in for a treat. Deeply,deeply researched, with possibly more than you ever wanted to know, it will take several readings to digest. There was a tremendous effort put into this book.
I became depressed at times, every time I saw the phrases "Went missing"., "Around Cape Horn" , "Lost in typhoon","Burned to the waterline" and I saw them a lot. The Captain did the Horn six times, and his widow was still alive, living with us, when I was a little kid, but i had no idea it was that bad.
We think about "Romance of the beautiful Clipper, spanking along under an acre of sail", but when you get down and dirty with it, you'd drag me kicking and screaming into a fo'castle after reading this. This was a rare time in our History. Our clippers were beating the pants off merchantmen from other countries. It was like the '"Muscle Car" era. Merchantmen of other nations would reef up for the night, we'd put out the studding sails. The lives of most of the ships were not that long, with the sail they carried. Think about putting a Hemi in an Austin Healey sprite, and it's a pretty good analogy. Some of them were beaten like rented mules.

Gr 5-7-Set during the 1960s and 1970s, the novel follows Jason Steed from his birth, which caused his mother's death and created a rift between him and his father, to a critical mission he accidentally joins at age 11. Jason is almost superhuman: his martial arts skills across several styles are amazing, his linguistic ability incredible, and his tenacity and resolve, even at age five, are impressive. But despite his amazing skills and his knack for getting himself into places and organizations where he shouldn't be, Jason has normal emotions: he craves his father's love, he develops firm friendships, he takes a stand against bullies, and he mourns when he cannot prevent the deaths of his friends. The action is fast, and the spy and military aspects of the Sea Cadets, a British organization that trains youngsters for the military, seem designed to appeal to reluctant male readers. The novel is violent, particularly in Jason's final (and accidental) mission, and the deaths that impact him are handled with grace, even while physical injuries are graphically described. hard to find books you can buy for your grandkids!

This was recommended to me as a book with a decent moral compass. I always read anything I buy for the grandkids before I pass it on and this is a definite winner.

No spoilers here :~).

Is it realistic? No. One of the reviewers bemoaned the lost opportunities to explore political and pragmatic implications and I believe missed the true value of this story for the age group. It was the sort of things dreams are made of -- both bad dreams and good dreams. Jason Steed has the tenacity and abilities even I - as a grandmother - would dream of. He also has the vulnerabilities of a child. The father son relationship is dealt with compassionately for both. The adventures, challenges, and fast pace make it a real page turner and easy read for the reluctant reader.

There is something here for everyone: friendship, conflict, romance, royalty, discipline and responsibility, challenge. I loved it. Was it perfect? No. But close enough for me! I have just ordered the sequels and have several grandsons in mind for the shared adventure. Thank you, Mr. Cooper. Well done, sir!

Amazing Book!!

I am 12 years old and found this book on goodreads. I didn't think it would be anything special, but I loved it. It is written with the style of Anthony Horrowitz, and is about a boy who is kind of turned into a spy. It is a great book packed with adventure, perfect for kids aged 10 and up. It has good, fast paced writing and a great plot. I think you should definitely read this book.

This is a book that I want to read over and over. And I wanted to have a copy of it for my children to read also. I love martial arts so I'm really glad that there is another series of a martial arts spy kid. Alex Rider ones are too much like a mini James Bond. These are much more interesting, have more plot twists, and general awesomeness.

I am not a typical reader of Chomsky - my views would be described as 'conservative'. But in my studies over the past 10 years I have tried to read the 'other side'. My conclusion is that our oppressors have benefited from (and probably planned) the great divide between liberals and conservatives. Conservatives trust the "markets" while Liberals trust the government. The truth is that the government and the market are two heads of the same beast when crony capitalism takes over and the oligarchy rules. That is why there was no appreciable difference from Bush to Clinton to Bush to Obama. Both sides need to realize that the oligarchy benefits from this division, and we need to seek common ground to dismantle the power structures that are slowly squeezing the liberties out of our society.

Removing Blinders

For some time people have been aware that we live in a government-by-corporation world. Mr Chomsky lays out the nuts and bolts of how this works. For someone who cares, this is a good starting point at getting an education on the subject. Vilified by conservatives and liberals alike who feed at the corporate troughs, Mr Chomsky sees things as they are. I would recommend any of his books.

Should Be A Must Read For Americans

Noam Chomsky is a national treasure that the nation will never treasure. He lays down a literate and blistering critique of the Establishment's creation of the downward spiral in which we see the United States today, as well as similar issues around the world. Although he seems to repeat himself from chapter to chapter at times, it's because often the root of the problems his discusses is the same. Worth a read.

In Oryx and Crake, a science fiction novel that is more Swift than Heinlein, more cautionary tale than "fictional science" (no flying cars here), Margaret Atwood depicts a near-future world that turns from the merely horrible to the horrific, from a fool's paradise to a bio-wasteland. Snowman (a man once known as Jimmy) sleeps in a tree and just might be the only human left on our devastated planet. He is not entirely alone, however, as he considers himself the shepherd of a group of experimental, human-like creatures called the Children of Crake. As he scavenges and tends to his insect bites, Snowman recalls in flashbacks how the world fell apart.

While the story begins with a rather ponderous set-up of what has become a clich�d landscape of the human endgame, littered with smashed computers and abandoned buildings, it takes on life when Snowman recalls his boyhood meeting with his best friend Crake: "Crake had a thing about him even then.... He generated awe ... in his dark laconic clothing." A dangerous genius, Crake is the book's most intriguing character. Crake and Jimmy live with all the other smart, rich people in the Compounds--gated company towns owned by biotech corporations. (Ordinary folks are kept outside the gates in the chaotic "pleeblands.") Meanwhile, beautiful Oryx, raised as a child prostitute in Southeast Asia, finds her way to the West and meets Crake and Jimmy, setting up an inevitable love triangle. Eventually Crake's experiments in bioengineering cause humanity's shockingly quick demise (with uncanny echoes of SARS, ebola, and mad cow disease), leaving Snowman to try to pick up the pieces. Atwood has visited the future before, in her dystopian novel, The Handmaid's Tale. In her latest, the future is even bleaker. The triple whammy of runaway social inequality, genetic technology and catastrophic climate change, has finally culminated in some apocalyptic event. As Jimmy, apparently the last human being on earth, makes his way back to the RejoovenEsencecompound for supplies, the reader is transported backwards toward that cataclysmic event, its full dimensions gradually revealed. Jimmy grew up in a world split between corporate compounds (gated communities metastasized into city-states) and pleeblands (unsafe, populous and polluted urban centers). His best friend was "Crake," the name originally his handle in an interactive Net game, Extinctathon. Even Jimmy's mother-who ran off and joined an ecology guerrilla group when Jimmy was an adolescent-respected Crake, already a budding genius. The two friends first encountered Oryx on the Net; she was the eight-year-old star of a pedophilic film on a site called HottTotts. Oryx's story is a counterpoint to Jimmy and Crake's affluent adolescence. She was sold by her Southeast Asian parents, taken to the city and eventually made into a sex "pixie" in some distant country. Jimmy meets Oryx much later-after college, after Crake gets Jimmy a job with ReJoovenEsence. Crake is designing the Crakers-a new, multicolored placid race of human beings, smelling vaguely of citron. He's procured Oryx to be his personal assistant. She teaches the Crakers how to cope in the world and goes out on secret missions. The mystery on which this riveting, disturbing tale hinges is how Crake and Oryx and civilization vanished, and how Jimmy-who also calls himself "the Snowman," after that other rare, hunted specimen, the Abominable Snowman-survived. Chesterton once wrote of the "thousand romances that lie secreted in The Origin of Species." Atwood has extracted one of the most hair-raising of them, and one of the most brilliant.

Surely Atwood deserved a respite after The Blind Assassin (2000) won the Booker Prize, but the muse had more to say, hence this hijack-intense speculative novel, sister to one of Atwood's most indelible works, The Handmaid's Tale (1985). Now calling himself Snowman (as in Abominable), he's preparing for an arduous scavenger expedition back to the formerly high-tech compound in which he lived and worked until the bioengineering industry ran amok and a catastrophic event put an end to civilization. Snowman is desperately lonely, but he isn't actually alone since he serves as guru for a strangely passive tribe unaware of the lost world of computers, bullet trains, Web porn, gene-splicing, and the plagues that Snowman so vividly and regretfully recalls. Atwood has done better

Margaret Atwood is easily one of my favorite authors. Some of her books had me at the edge of my seat. I remember as a kid reading under the covers with a flashlight because it was past my bed time and I would get in trouble otherwise.
This book is just not like that. I’ve had a much harder time getting attached to these characters and wanting to know what happens next. I’ve been reading it for a couple months now on and off. It’s very interesting and of course it is beautifully written (as anything Margaret Atwood is) but it’s just hard to figure out what is going on.
I’m about halfway through the book now…and I suppose it would be better to finish it before writing a review but…it’s so hard to read without falling asleep. I couldn’t even tell you what the plot is yet. It is interesting at some points but I am just not sure where it is going…if it is going anywhere.
Although still a good book…just not what I expected from an author like Margaret Atwood and with so many good reviews. Maybe I’m just not reading it right or something. When a book is a best seller you do expect it to have a certain value to it that appeals to a broad audience and I just do not think this book has it. If I had to watch this as a movie I would probably fall asleep in the middle which is where most movies/books are just getting good!

Patience, grasshopper

This book was hard for me to get into. I'm not sure why. I started and stopped numerous times. When I finally finished it, I was glad I did. The book doesn't really grab you until about middle of the book. When it grabs you, it really grabs you, so consider yourself warned!

This has excellent theme and is thought provoking. While the plot is slow to develop, the second half of the book makes up for the first half. If you can have patience, then you will be rewarded with an excellent story.

I have been reading science fiction since I was twelve years old. I've read just about everything, except more recently because I am getting older and find so much of science fiction just repeating itself. New ideas are getting harder and harder to find.

One recent reviewer didn't think that Oryx and Crake qualified as good sci-fi because good sci-fi requires depth of character. He must be kidding. You have to look long and hard for character development in sci-fi. The problem with most science fiction today is the people who write the stuff fancy themselves Artists and claim that sci-fi is great literature. So they say.

Here's the rub: Oryx and Crake is science fiction. There is no doubt about it. But more importantly, Margaret Atwood is not a science fiction writer. Science fiction writers are the first to attest to that. To let Margaret Atwood into their hallowed self-congratulatory circle would mean setting a standard that few are capable of equaling.

Oryx and Crake is filled with character development. The story is about us. And because of that there is nothing very special about Jimmy. Jimmy is your typical self absorbed human being. Margaret Atwood does a wonderful job of showing us how rank we are capable of becoming as we consume everything in sight, and in the process pollute the very form and essence of life. Everything will turn to kaka, and we will find ways to consume even that. So, when you find out what a Pigoon is for, or what a ChickieNob is, go ahead and laugh, it's hilarious. Die laughing.

For years, science fiction writers have brought us broadside attacks on consumerism and corporate absurdity. Science fiction is loaded with satire, but too often it's about Them. We are endlessly invaded from without. In the end, we will have done it to ourselves. The meek aren't going to inherit the Earth, they will destroy it.

OUTSTANDING WORK, FROM A BRILLIANT MIND

Off course, what else can anyone expect from the mind of Dr. Ricardo??? I just wish he had already published this book when I was still in my Undergraduate years as a Physics Major. Or perhaps even better: When I used to sit in his classroom. I owe my mathematical skills to the same teaching techniques I see when I read his book: The ability of Dr. Ricardo to explain complex subjects in a simple way, so different from many other instructors, especially at the undergraduate level. That is, not only the ability to get students to see the practical application of mathematical concepts, but to motivate them to do interesting work. I took my differential equations with another teacher, using the De Prima textbook, (a classic) long before Dr. Ricardo published his work. Nevertheless, I just purchased his book, it is part of my library and will remain there as a source of teaching ideas. Reading his work was like if I was still seating at his calculus class.

Your mileage may vary, for the wrong reasons!

This is primarily a response to the startling denunciation in one of the other reviews.

In the last analysis, it isn't hard to learn the particular tricks you need to solve everybody's favorite exam questions--Tennenbaum or the Schaum Series books (Lipschutz? Spiegel?) will help you do that. Many students should go that route, particularly those who have a firm commitment to being able to perform at a minimal level, without being distracted by concepts at all. (This is humor; I do not subscribe to this theory personally. It is sad that I feel obliged to point this out...)

Slope fields are a MAJOR tool to understand what is going on in a differential equation. The fact that software is now easily able to produce slope fields is a FABULOUS advantage to living in these times. Another tool is phase space; I shudder to think what the reviewer would think of that! A semester of classical mechanics should cure people who do not understand the value of phase space.

Unfortunately, most instructors --including myself-- continue to feel obliged to set examinations in which slope fields do not figure largely. A test containing lots of graphics is beyond the scope of what most instructors are willing to do. (I think I've just persuaded myself to try it!) As a result, the typical student is more concerned with the algebraic aspects of the subject (which are admittedly fascinating), rather than the conceptual aspects of the subject. This probably includes the vast number of low-level engineers who do not aspire to use more than 6.7 differential equations in their entire lives, and so do not need to get involved in the concepts too heavily.

At the more advanced level, I suspect that engineers do certainly need to engage in the more subtle and sophisticated aspects of differential equations, dynamical systems and control systems. Unfortunately, they probably do not know what they will encounter as adults while in their sophomore years! Trust me: ODEs are a lot more than algebra.

Ricardo's book is what I intend to adopt. I hope my students will not review the book until the end of the semester!

Excellent book

I took ODE class 15 years ago and never had to use it in practice. Now, due to a nature of work I have to go back and refresh my knowledge. This is excellent book for student or anyone who wants to understand how to solve and apply differential equations in real life.
My old professor used dry, formal approach to just manipulate equations and never really taught real life use cases.
Unlike most of textbooks I've seen, this book is self contained, no question is left unanswered. I mean really no question.
If topic is not covered in the main text, author provides all the necessary information in appendix, you will even find introduction to vector algebra and complex numbers. You will never see vague explanation or do it yourself calculation for any formula derivation that is not trivial.
Excellent work. I wish I had a chance to use this textbook long time ago when I took my ODE class.

A Fantastic Read

Theories of Relativity is a great novel. It allows you to travel into the mind of a 16 year old teen named Dylan who was recently kicked out of his house. He struggles day after day begging for money to be able to buy food to live. He finds a few friends and thinks he has a tight relationship with all of them, but unfortunately one of them ends up betraying him. Throughout the novel Dylan has to face a few but tough obstacles that confront him and they leave him both physically and emotionally scarred for life.

Also, I agree with Marsha Skrypuch, who previously said that "The story will stay with you." It has definitely touched me and will stay with me in the future. Not only has it influenced my perspective on life, I think it will influence anyone else who reads it. After finishing reading this book I took a moment and thought about how most people have very easy lives and how Dylan had to struggle during his life, both when he lived in his house with his family and also when he lived on the streets.

This fantastic book has left a deep imprint on me and it will on anyone else who reads it. I recommend everyone to read this book as it is most definitely a MUST READ!

I have a theory.... this book is great!

The novel starts out with a 16-year old teen named Dylan, a bright but emotionally damaged boy because of the bad breaks that he has gone through. When his mother got pregnant, his father left her to fend for herself and Dylan. In the present, Dylan was kicked out of his house because of his bad attitude and his mother's innate hatred for him. Now on the streets, Dylan must face the unrelenting and harsh reality of the world. Dylan must learn to protect himself and his values or the streets will have taken another victim....

Overall, I think this book was great because the author has made it seem like what happened to Dylan could happen to anyone. This book also portrays the awful truth about homeless teens and how low that some of them may go to survive just a few days on the streets.

This book is masterfully executed with little flaws and I would totally recommend this book to anyone who is interested in these issues or if you just want a good book to read.

Leslie Collier was from 1978 to 1986 Professor of Virology at the London Hospital Medical College, being succeeded in this post by John Oxford. John Oxford is Professor of Virology at St. Bartholomew's and The Royal London School of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of London. He is the co-author of two standard texts on Influenza and Virology and has published 250 scientific papers throughout the world. Professor Oxford serves as the Scientific Director of Retroscreen, Ltd., the College's research virology company.

Best book available for intro virology

As a virology student, this is the first place I go to when reviewing any viral disease. It gets to the point and gives you all the necessary information you need on viruses. For all the common viruses, this book has no equal. Other books do go into more detail, but nothing comes close to Collier to giving you the basic knowledge you need.

For very select audience only

I was required to read this for a Public Health course. The textbook skips over vital explanations, uses too many abbreviations (without explaining what they are), and bolds important words without defining them. I was constantly on the computer attempting to find a better explanation elsewhere. However, I guess I should fault the professor of my course more than the textbook authors. Perhaps this book should have a memo explaining it is only for those with an advanced understanding of microbiology and medicine.
