The two sections in this book are the sun and the moon. AJ uses them to provide a subtle contrast, incorporating traditional Eastern spirituality into her philosophies. These philosophies, of course, are interspersed throughout the book. The subject of spirituality is already rife with poetic sentiment; AJ's ability to hone in on the existing themes and make them her own shows that she is not only an acute reader, but also an experienced writer. Furthermore, she is aware of every thought and every word she presents. This is her first book, but it seems like a collection of philosophy and introspection that was thoughtfully crafted through years of reflection. I could go into a bit of detail about her philosophies, but that is for you to discover, as you will doubtless pick this back up dozens of times.
Many of these poems deal with love, but some also speak to the importance of culture in one's life. This is most certainly a cerebral work, and there is much to unpack; let this not deter you from recognizing its beauty. What is most striking about these statements is that they are spoken with intelligence and authority. In the intricacies of these concise pages, one can extract a multitude of far-reaching thoughts. This is a writer with far-reaching ideals. If this is the beginning, I'm excited to see what is next.
