About the Author
Susan Welch received her AB and PhD degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is currently Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Professor of Political Science at The Pennsylvania State University. Her teaching and research areas include legislatures, urban politics, and women and minorities in politics. She publishes widely on issues of race, gender, and urban politics.
John Gruhl, Professor of Political Science, received his AB from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, and his PhD from the University of California at Santa Barbara. Since joining the University of Nebraska faculty in 1976, he has taught and done research in the areas of judicial process, criminal justice, and civil rights and liberties. He holds campus- and university-wide distinguished teaching awards for excellence in undergraduate teaching and became a charter member of the university's Academy of Distinguished Teachers.
Susan M. Rigdon received AB and PhD degrees in political science from the University of Illinois in 1966 and 1971, respectively. While focusing her teaching on comparative politics and international relations, she has also taught American government courses at several universities in the United States and China. Her research interests include culture and politics, security policy, and poverty and development. She is a Research Associate in Anthropology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Sue Thomas is Senior Research Scientist at the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation (PIRE) and Director of PIRE-Santa Cruz. Prior to joining PIRE, she served as Associate Professor of Government and Director of Women's Studies at Georgetown University. She received her A.B. and M.Ed. from UCLA, and her Ph.D. from University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Her research specialty is women and politics, and among her publications are How Women Legislate and Women and Elective Office: Past, Present, and Future.

Not very good.

This book gets the job done, but I can't help but be annoyed by it from time to time. Out of the 6 classes that I'm taking this semester, it's the thickest textbook that I've got, but it seems to cover the least amount of information. It's easy to tell that the author is both liberal and female. I'm actually more liberal than conservative, and I like women, but I don't think that a good government book should have an obvious bias.
The author over-uses SAT words to try to sound more credible. My vocabulary is decent enough, but I still get irritated, because it's poor writing skill to use uncommon words when trying to communicate with a common audience. By "common" I don't mean "stupid." I simply mean that every student is required to take a U.S. Government class, so the book should be written in a manner that attempts to communicate with the average student. Aside from that, when you use the word "egregious" in every other sentence, it makes you sound like a space alien. Nobody wants to learn about their government from a space alien.
Also, I feel that the book over-uses miscellaneous text boxes. It's not uncommon for books to sometimes have a little box of text off to the side or at the top or bottom of a page that contains some behind-the-scenes information or a little story that somehow pertains to the main text. However, this book utilizes those text boxes way too often and they're often pretty hefty in size. Every other page, you have to try to find a good point to break off from the current train of thought to read a text box that contains a completely different--and often unrelated--train of thought.
Some of these points may sound picky, but when a book costs almost $200, I feel that it should be well-written, designed and edited. On a positive note, I do feel that the author is probably very knowledgeable about our government. I just don't like how wordy/biased/text-boxy this book is. My professor's quizzes are only five questions per chapter, yet some chapters are over 40 pages--too much filler.

A smart and fast paced fiction that draws you in...

Understanding American Government is an instant cult classic! It's a riveting fictitious story of a utopian society where three branches of government including a judicial, executive, and legislative rule in an equal and balanced manner according to a Constitution. It is definitely a page turner and a must read for adrenalin junkies. Imagine a world where a legislative branch of government creates laws based on the needs of their constituents and a judicial branch of government checks the legislation to ensure it meets the standards set forth by original framers of a Constitution. If that isn't exciting enough, there is a third branch of government called the Administrative branch that actually manages government and enforces the laws that govern this fictitious society. The added twist.... there are rules that allow each branch of government to check each others work. Crazy right? Don't pick this book up unless you are prepared to read it cover to cover. The authors of this book are geniuses and dreamers that should be applauded.

Propoganda for the Left

A college kid in my house has this one. It covers american government, but EVERYTHING has a left spin on it.
t's a nice propoganda piece. There are periodic sections on "American Diversity" that discuss the faults of
europeans, whites, and males. There are sections talking about how "obviously" if you didn't vote for president obama you're a closet racist.
There's a section on Democrat and Republican corruption, but all of the examples talk about republican corruption in government and how Republicans on balance are more inclined to subvert the government.
They also never connect the dots whenever it's contrary to leftish philosophy. They talk about "negative attitudes" towards african americans and how it's unfair and racist, and then go on to say later that some whites resent affirmative action but they should just get over it, Blacks need the help... and then can't figure out why someone might then doubt that an african-american got his position on merit.
It's nearly endless, EVERYTHING has a leftish spin. Don't bother buying this book, don't use it in your classroom. Find something that is neutral in it's evaluation and not a Democrat hit piece or an effort to indocrinate the next generation.
Here's one straight out of the book: "Some opoents of the heatlh care reform passed in 2010 claim that the federal law is unconstitutional.... These opponents are called "Tenthers," because their argument is based on the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution.... The Tenthers cling to the original Constitution, while most Americans today accept our current Constitution."
SERIOUSLY? (1) I've never heard the term "tenthers", but nice job demeaning anyone who opposes socialized medicine or the individual mandate. (2) It was opposed based upon the COMMERCE CLAUSE not authorizing it. An argument that they won, by the way. (3) Last time I checked, we all have the same constituion. But you've written your article about how "most Americans accept..." versus those old reactionary, morons, those Tenthers who are some sort of fringe element. You get the idea.
The book is ludicrous, and makes no effort at balance. None.
