Lichen Keys and keys and keys.

Perhaps this review can add to the existing reviews "Excellent" & "Wonderful book"?. This publication contains expanded keys included in the five star, color Brodo et al. Lichens of North America publication. Pretty much, keys and that is it. There are no photos in this publication. The book has a couple of pages of illustrations, also included in Brodo et al. color publication and a glossary and references. The duplication of the illustrations are fair at best. Upon initial review, I almost returned these keys and still question the purchase. Why? The keys are incomplete, not inclusive of North American flora. When the book arrived, I drove to a couple of common genera pages (keys), common species and noted they were missing in the keys. Here is the deal, if you use the keys in the Brodo et al. color Lichens of North America publication, then this publication, Keys to Lichens of North America: Revised .....would be a good purchase, because of the expanded keys and may be 4 or 5 stars. If you do not use the keys in the Brodo et al. color book, then this publication may not be worth the purchase and 2 or 3 stars. Especially if you already have keys for your location of study. For the Pacific Northwest, these Macrolichen keys are probably not warranted for purchase because there are some pretty good keys/books available (McCune & Geiser). However the Microlichen (crustose) keys included may be of value (few pin lichen keys though)! The publication is spiral bound, wire and good for lab settings because it can lay flat, unlike the nice, beautiful big Brodo et a. publication. But then it is spiral bound, so it does not behave on the shelf like a hardbound. I'll keep this as a reference and perhaps it may be useful in my travels.
I do not consider the glossary, illustrated. There are ~10 pages of illustrations following the glossary. Reproduction of these pages are not ideal, fuzzy, faint line drawings in some cases, but useful. There are about 5 pages with 3 photos each following the 10 pages of illustrations.

Excellent but technical keys

An excellent update to the magnificent Lichens of North America. The keys are technical, and will likely frustrate those without microscopes and chemicals for spot tests. However, that is what is needed to correctly identify lichens.

The Lichen of NA Key in terms of content is wonderful. However, I'm disappointed in Yale with the publishing quality. I totally understand the need to make affordable keys, but because of the 'cheapness' of this publication, this is not something that is safe to take to the field. The pages at first blush look and seem water resistant, but they absorb water very easily causing almost immediate wrinkling. Likewise, the cover is made of a non-water-resistant paper and is very likely to rip. I wish Yale had chosen a better format to publish such a wonderful resource that I'm sure Brodo worked so hard on.
